Was Simone Hollingsworth kidnapped for ransom? Was her doting new husband involved? Or does her disappearance have something to do with her snooping neighbors--especially the neighbor's obsessive daughter? As she did so well in Written in Blood, Caroline Graham captures the inwardly seething inhabitants of a supposedly placid village with the skill of an expert entomologist observing an anthill. And Barnaby and Troy are once again the perfect pair: the chief inspector's calm introspection is a fine match for the younger, brasher officer's occasional outbursts and blunders. Witty characterizations coupled with some astute reflections on life in a remote English village more than make up for a dearth of solid suspects in Graham's latest addition to the Inspector Barnaby series (Written in Blood, 1995). Pampered housewife Simone Hollingsworth vanishes. Her workaholic hubby, Alan, hides out, hits the bottle hard and subsequently dies of poisoning. Timid next-door neighbor Brenda Brockley also disappears, as does local artist Sarah Lawson, beloved of Gray Patterson, a financially ruined software designer and onetime business partner of Alan Hollingsworth. Since Alan once ripped poor Gray off to buy a fancy piece of jewelry for the vapid, if decorous Simone, Gray's looking more than a wee bit guilty. Eventually, a ransom message is delivered for Simone, and Brenda is revealed to have been involved in a secret romance. Series copper Barnaby is an unobtrusive detective who plods for the most part and is aided by surly subordinate Sergeant Troy, a ladies' man and chronic snob. What distinguishes this series from run-of-the-mill English country fare is Graham's dry wit, which is especially smooth when turned on the banality of English middle-class repression: "Now, as she slid the little aluminum tray from its temptingly illustrated sleeve, she thought how very reassuring frozen comestibles were. Constrained beneath a glittery crust of sterile crystals, they did not leak or smell or ask to be in any way humanly dealt with."

Delightful, nasty little English country mystery

Another English inspector mystery starring Chief Inspector Barnaby, this one is a bit of a departure for Caroline Graham. All of the usual characters are still in play here: the villages of Ferne Basset and Fawcett Green, the town of Causton, Inspector Barnaby, his faithful-yet-shallow-yet-extremely talented sidekick Troy, and the usual CID cronies. This book is especially twisty and turny and a very fun ride. I tend to associate Caroline Graham with more straightforward, Agatha Christie-type whodunits, which have fun twists but not at every turn, for heaven's sake! The local village characters are outrageously well drawn; we've all had neighbors like some of these and Graham has captured all of them most perfectly. I didn't see the ending come on this one but I had my suspicions, which went back and forth for the whole book. Such is the good writing where you are forced to glance at everyone in the book with a jaundiced eye!

One of the most durable myths in Western culture, the story of Faust tells of a learned German doctor who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for knowledge and power. Early enactments of Faust's damnation were often the raffish fare of clowns and low comedians. But the young Elizabethan playwright Christopher Marlowe (1564–1593) recognized in the story of Faust's temptation and fall the elements of tragedy.
In his epic treatment of the Faust legend, Marlowe retains much of the rich phantasmagoria of its origins. There are florid visions of an enraged Lucifer, dueling angels, the Seven Deadly Sins, Faustus tormenting the Pope, and his summoning of the spirit of Alexander the Great. But the playwright created equally powerful scenes that invest the work with tragic dignity, among them the doomed man's calling upon Christ to save him and his ultimate rejection of salvation for the embrace of Helen of Troy.

Great Book, Great Price

Because this was reproduced printing from an earlier source, I expected the layout and maybe smallness of the text to be a problem. I was very suprised. It was a very good read and Christopher Marlowe is just awesome. Great story of temptation and regret. Everyone should love this book.

The English Faust

Not everybody knows Faust(us). But a lot do. Most readers know this tragic personnage who allied himself with the devil and finally paid the price for his betrayal of God from a famous play written by J.W. Goethe. It was him who wrote the most famous version of Faust's history. (If you want to know more about Goethe's work, please visit my reviewer page.) But he wasn't the only dramatist who considered this lost magician worth a tragedy. Exactly 2 centuries and 1 year before Goethe published his work, a play by the Englishman Christopher Marlowe saw the light of the world.
Marlowe and Goethe are different personalities living in completely different times so that it's no wonder their plays vary in character. Goethe lived in prosperity and had all his life to think about subjects like human nature, social relationships, history and its influence on the present, love, religion and much more. He was a philosoph, and that's the reason why Goethe's "Faust" is sometimes difficult to understand because you have to dive under the surface of things to understand their true nature. Marlowe's work is different: This man was certainly very intelligent and knew a lot about the forces that moved the world, but, unlike Goethe, he didn't have a lifetime to think about one single play. You can imagine that Marlowe's "Faust" became more shallow, but still not shallow enough to be ignored by this imaginary institution we call World Literature. As a compensation, Marlowe's work contains more life and action in it, something I can't say about Goethe's. Both men were geniuses. In this review, I'd like to pay my tribute to the Englishman.
As stated above, the play tells the story of a medieval scientist who allies himself with the devil. The latter promises to serve the first in this world, whereas Faust must do the same in hell. The poor doctor doubts his choices because it's his soul being sold, still he follows the devil and has the time of his life. I beg your pardon, for I feel the need to return to Goethe to show you another important difference between both versions: Whereas Marlowe's Faust wants the devil to provide him with fun and all richness of the world (materialism), Goethe's alter ego feels the importance to be educated by the devil to get a complete picture of the world. At the end, Marlowe's Faust realizes that all experiences weren't worth his soul. He begs God to save him, but it is no longer possible. The devil tears his body apart and takes his soul with him to infinite sufferings.
The effect this play had on me was tremedous. Fascinated, I watched Faust's development. I particularly liked the 5th act where he realizes that all is finally lost. You can really feel his pain in those scenes; the effect is unbelievable.
So, if you want to be touched by human tragedy, I really advise you to read this book. It's done very quickly, so you needn't worry about the time it takes. If you want to make a step further and find additional material on Faust, read Goethe's "Faust 1" as well as Thomas Mann's "Doctor Faustus". It's a marvelous novel and the most modern narration based on the medieval German scientist named Johann(es) Faust(us).

In ``Old Mother Hubbard,'' a shaggy dog and a few props (broom, child's chair, shiny tin can) have been photographed on a painted background that shows a cupboard mounted on a wall and a few frying pans on pegs, so that it looks like a scene in a play. The tone varies: While most of the paintings maintain a hushed, staged quality, ``The Cat and the Fiddle'' includes a cartoonish dish and spoon that remind readers of the artifice involved. As in Anne Geddes's books, the pictures will be more appreciated by adults than children, and possibly more suited to postcards than for rhymes available in other volumes. "Old Mother Hubbard" whipped her children soundly; an old man is thrown down the stairs in "Goosey, Goosey, Gander" for not saying his prayers; a little boy tries to drown a cat in "Ding, Dong Bell;" and in "Little Bo-Peep" the tails of her lambs are hung up to dry, which "made her heart bleed." Just because nursery rhymes are traditional does not mean they are particularly good or need to be republished! I think the artist could have found much more suitable, less violent nursery rhymes to base her art on. I would definitely not recommend this book for children.

This book is a star

A gorgeous book of popular nursery rhymes with the real star being the illustrations.
Each double page features photographs of an animal set against a brightly painted background.
My 1 year old son loved this book so much that we had to borrow it six consecutive times from our local library.
From admiring this book he now oinks, barks, quacks and baa's - but we are still having troubles mastering the sound of a koala!
A lovely addition to any child's library - we are eagerly awaiting the reprint.

Love the pictures and short poems!

This book is perfect for age 1+. This book has several short nursery rhymes and big, bright, beautiful pictures. My one year old loves this book and pointing out all the animals she knows on each page. The rhythmical lyrics also help her fall fast asleep. :-)
