A lovely summer read
By Roso
After finding her boyfriend in a compromising position with another woman, Laurie decides to leave London behind and head home to Cornwall, to Sunset Bay and her sister. Mia Chapman has made a success of both she and her grandmother’s dreams in running Dolly’s Diner, a spot where the locals, and the visitors love to hang out. She’s not that thrilled to see her sister Laurie return. As far as Mia’s concerned, Laurie bailed at a time when Mia and her family needed Laurie most. Coming home now won’t change anything. Or will it? Once as close as only sisters can be, Laurie tries to find a way back into her sister’s heart. This is a lovely story, with Cornwall as a backdrop, and two sisters who finally find their way home

Review: 'A Home in Sunset Bay' by Rebecca Pugh
By Jody - "A Spoonful of Happy Endings"
Ever since the death of her beloved grandmother, Mia Chapman has run Dolly's Diner, the 50s style diner her grandmother started and loved with all her heart, in the lovely Cornish town of Sunset Bay. Mia has developed the same kind of passion for the diner and couldn't imagine living or working anywhere else. But Mia's life is suddenly disturbed when her older sister Laurie, whom she has hardly spoken to in years, arrives in town, looking for her. Laurie has been through quite a rough patch; no longer enjoying her London life, including her job and a cheating boyfriend. So, she decides to flee to Sunset Bay, hoping Mia will be able to help her out, even if it's just for a few weeks. However, Mia is still angry with her sister and not quite yet ready to forgive for something that happened in the past... Will they be able to work it out or will Laurie be forced to return back to where she came from?

It's always great to discover new authors whose stories leave me with a smile on my face and that's definitely what Rebecca Pugh's recently released 'A Home in Sunset Bay' did! This was the first book of Rebecca's that I've read, but it definitely won't be the last. If you're looking for a warm, lovely, captivating chick lit/romance read; look no further! 'A Home in Sunset Bay' focuses on the lives of sisters Mia and Laurie and is set in the small Cornish town of Sunset Bay. The setting is wonderful; it's cosy and just the typical type of small town where the people know and watch out for one another; I loved it and wish I could visit Dolly's Diner myself for a delicious piece of pie! It was easy to warm to both main characters Mia and Laurie and their stories were interesting, especially with the addition of secondary characters such as cooks Cal and Marco and waitress Polyanna.

The novel is quite fast-paced, which I really enjoyed. It doesn't focus on a few days but several months, giving the reader the chance to really see the characters develop and experience different things. I do think just a few extra twists could have been added to the storyline here and there, but I still really enjoyed it and was sad to leave the characters behind at the ending of the book. I already really look forward to checking out more of Rebecca's work and think she's a promising new voice within the genre! Overall, 'A Home in Sunset Bay' is a cosy, warm and uplifting story about family and friendship; a simply lovely read!

Ever since my friends read and loved her debut novel Return to Bluebell Hill
By Irena
I had Rebecca Pugh on my radar for quite some time. Ever since my friends read and loved her debut novel Return to Bluebell Hill, I just knew I had to check her out.
I'm not gonna lie to you: I went into this story with pretty high expectations.
Reading this book was like watching the life go by trough the mist. I could see things happening, but I never got involved enough to gasp, swoon, wonder what's going to happen or even feel, to be perfectly honest with you.
The writing style is pretty good and it do keeps you interested, but at the same time it does not sort itself out with it's beauty or uniqueness. Unfortunately, in my copy of this book, I didn't underline any sentences from this novel. Not because I was lazy to take notes, but because I didn't find any that appealed to me.
I would say that Pugh's style is detailed, but not too detailed. I think she managed to handle some situations in this book really good (like the cheating scene, where her character doesn't know how to react, and the writer makes us sympathise with the character but at the same time there is still that chick-lit feeling to it).
I also need to emphasize how perfectly the writer described the surrounding of the story. I think the scenes were captured pretty well and it almost felt like I was there at some moments (my favorite was how Dolly's Diner was described. Trust me, I am not lying when saying I wanted to be there).
Characters were likeable but not one of them made me care enough.
Still, there was one character that I didn't like, who was also a love interes tin the story. I think he was a s***ty boyfriend to his girlfriend and emotional cheater, so of course I wasn't satisfied that he was the only candidate for one of our main characters.
The story plot was predictable and, although I don't mind it in some cases, it felt like there wasn't enough drama or action trough the story to keep me satisfied. Some things that supposed to be issues between characters weren't that big of the deal in my eyes. Plus, I questioned the law aspect of this story, but since I am not from the same country as characters of the book, I don't think I am in the position to judge.
All in all, since this is only the second novel written by Rebecca Pugh, I think she has a lot of time to grow as a writer and I do believe she will only get better with time. I am looking forward to see where her writing career will take her and read more stories by her.

Game Theory in Management: Modelling Business Decisions and their Consequences, by Michael Hatfield

Architects and engineers can build models to test their ideas - why not managers? In Game Theory in Management: Modelling Business Decisions and Their Consequences, author Michael Hatfield presents a series of mathematically structured analogies to real-life business and economic interaction scenarios, and then, using modern game theory, he shows how to test common managerial technical approaches for their effectiveness. His results are astonishing: if game theory is correct then many commonly-held and taught management approaches and techniques are not only less effective than thought, they are actually detrimental in many areas where they are held to be beneficial. Game Theory in Management also examines managerial implications from network theory, cartage schemes, risk management theory, management information system epistemology, and other areas where the quantification and testing of business decisions can be employed to identify winning and losing stratagems. While the topic may seem complex, Game Theory in Management is a readable and fast-paced book; readers will come away with an entirely new perspective on the objectives, tactics, even purpose of management, and ways of evaluating the selected strategies and decisions of those within the team, inside the macro organization, and among competitors. Easily-employed tests for the validity and efficacy of management information systems are also addressed, as are those environments where cartage schemes can be most effective, and where they are not. In the areas of asset, project, and strategic management, Game Theory in Management is certain to become a game-changer.

Review
'The subject matter is fairly advanced, Michael's writing style is free of the ponderousness that afflicts so many other books on the subjects of management science or game theory. He makes his points clearly and entertainingly. Just the term epistemology - the study of knowledge and its limits - I found rather daunting. Michael's employment of game theory is thorough, complete, and, best of all, crystal clear. Game Theory in Management is a must-read for executive or strategic managers, and especially for those who seek to successfully begin a PMO.' Mihaela Popa-Simil, PhD, MBA 'Having been entertained for eleven years by Michael Hatfield's work for PM Network magazine, I knew that I would like this book. But after forty years as a manager, I didn't know I would learn so much from it. Whether analyzing the origins of chess, the miscalculations of World War II, or the perfidy of Enron's energy traders, Michael moves effortlessly across the field of decision making, all in his trademark, easy-to-read style. Most of all, he shows us what game theory can - and can't - do for us as practicing managers.' Bud Baker, Professor of Management, Wright State University, USA 'The author is an extensively experienced, professionally qualified and internationally recognized project management writer and practitioner...Game Theory in Management findings and conclusions are so contrary to generally accepted and applied management practice, it could be a prelude to a paradigm shift.' American Society for the Advancement of Project Management 'It is much more than just Game Theory as applied to Management Decision Making. It is an excellent review of several management theories used for decision making and identifies their limitations and boundaries... once the PMP certificate is acquired, this book should be in every Project Manager's library.' PM World Journal, November 2012

a heart-warming true story of an immigrant from Georgia, Rus
By A Customer
This is the story of a man who loved America from the moment he set foot on our shores. He said, and never changed his mind that, in America, "Anything Can Happen." There are many vignettes in his book, telling of his adventures and misadventures in America, but he never changed his opinion that he loved America, even though he sought the companionship of other Georgians. This book was made into a movie which fell far short of the book, which dealt with his honesty, integrity, and love for all pertaining to America and his fellow men. This book is heart-warming, poignant, and often brings a tear to the eye; in other parts it brings a chuckle or a laugh or a general thumbs-up. I have read the book a number of times not only to myself, but aloud to my family, especially when traveling. Exceptionally enjoyable were vignettes about Dzea Vanno, the wager about fitting a Nash wheel on their vehicle, Luba--who had the disposition of a camel, and at a party, his saying, regarding food, that "...only too much was ever enough", plus being outside and listening to "...people being happy and enjoying themselves in his home" (paraphrased). I heartily recommend this book to anyone!

Best Laugh Therapy
By Kat Grossman
I love this book and have read it many times. When I have a friend who needs cheering up, I loan them my copy. It is usually passed around to their family & friends before I get it back. If ever one is in need of hope, this story provides a beautiful example of people helping, loving, laughing and eating together. It is the quintessential story of immigration to America with its deprivation, hard work and eventual success. With the help of Georg's wife, it is told with the indiosyncratic syntax of a non-native speaker of English which makes you feel the author is telling his adventures to you directly. Papashvily was an amazing person and one of the few authors that I would love to have spent an evening with listening to his stories. This makes a great gift of joy to anyone you know.

A laugh, an inspiration
By Chara
This collection of humorous short stories describes America as seen through the eyes of an immigrant from the country of Georgia who first stepped foot in the USA in the early 1920s.

First published in 1945, it was co-written by Mr. Papashvily and his wife Helen in the author's original style of "Georgian" English. The author was, according to Wikipedia, a famous writer and sculptor who was listed in Who's Who in the categories of both writing and art. Chapters in this book deal with topics such as getting a job (the author was trained in Georgia as a swordmaker and a decorative leatherworker), joining a labor strike, going to court for a crime he didn't commit, helping a friend work his way through depression (the cure: Uncle John's garlic sauce, freshly grilled shish kebobs, and a fight with a trio of Italian/American farmers who thought the Georgians' picnic fire on the beach was set by bootleggers to attract their boats, but later contributed their own homemade wine when invited to join the party), marriage (Uncle John, a restaurateur, catered the wedding feast and it sounds delicious!), and trying to find someone--anyone--who could speak the author's little-known native language (eventually he succeeded).

I highly recommend this book to anyone who remembers America as it was sixty-plus years ago, and/or who is ready for some thought-provoking humor.

Cosmotheism: Divine Aryan Consciousness From Man to Super-Man, by Aaron Collins

Life is short, must it also be empty? Must it also be bitter? Must its passing hold terror? Where is fulfillment to be found in the midst of shallow and empty things? Where is peace to be found in the midst of chaos and strife? Where is serenity to be obtained in a spiritual wasteland? Seek no more, for we give you these answer, and more. We show you the meaning and the purpose of things. We lead you from confusion and uncertainty to knowledge; from weakness to strength; from frustrated desire to fulfillment. Deep inside all of us, in our race-soul, there is a source of divine wisdom, of ages-old wisdom, of wisdom as old as the universe. That is the wisdom, the truth, of Cosmotheism. It is a truth of which most of us have been largely unconscious all our lives, but which now we have the opportunity to understand clearly and precisely... Dr. Pierce’s Cosmotheism is not a ‘revealed’ religion, but is instead what he called a natural religion, in that it rejects all of the claimed supernatural and unverifiable communications between a putative deity and man which find their way onto shining golden plates or ancient scrolls, instead having its basis in the realities of Nature that our eyes — and the investigations of science — have confirmed. In the drama of the evolution of life from non-living matter, and of higher and more conscious beings from lower forms of life, William Pierce sees a path of purpose and destiny for us.

Finally there is a quality book on Cosmotheism
By Lucy
Dr. William Pierce had the gift of presenting complicated matters in a simple way. He could explain rockets to a child. His God and religion or 'Path' to the higher man, which is, a very complex matter has been made understandable. This is the path of the Total Man who has been liberated. A must read for anyone who longs for a greater understanding. A greater understanding that comes from within and 'The Path' helps make that possible. Cosmotheism is the religion and philosophy of the future and the founder of the once great National Alliance makes it accessible in this book.
I really enjoyed this book. Someone has needed to put forth Cosmotheism in a comprehensive manner for a long time. 'The Path' of Cosmotheism is vital to the awakening of Higher Consciousness. Well formulated and inspiring, I would recommend this book to anyone who is not satisfied with the world they are living in. It is a work that has the power to change ones life. Page after page it gives meaning to striving for destiny. 5 stars

If you are an open minded and spiritually minded Aryan you'll enjoy this book

There's some really interesting articles in this book - I think that Pierce was genuine in regards to his Cosmotheist religious worldview, despite his enemies claims to the contrary. If you are an open minded and spiritually minded Aryan you'll enjoy this book.

The story of the awakening of mankind. The Consilience. Our destiny.
By Steven E. Romer
This book touches on what I consider to be the deepest truth of all-- the pattern written into the foundation of the universe for life to “read” eventually about who we are, where we come from, and where we are going. This information has been waiting there patiently for billions of years for us to open our eyes. This book compiles writings mostly from Dr. William Pierce on the cosmotheism religion, but also valuable writings from diverse others like Charles Lindbergh, etc. – who all naturally say the same kinds of things. This highlights the universality of these ideas.

I have studied religion for a long time, and there always seemed to be an "elephant" behind the scenes for me. When I heard the parable of "The Blind Men and the Elephant" for the first time, I was aware of exactly what that meant. There is a perennial philosophy of mankind which arises repeatedly across history -- like the heartbeat of a new humanity being born into the modern age. However, each time it arises, it is not clear enough, there is not an objective foundation of amassed information, and most importantly there are blind men everywhere who have needs, fears, and desires of the age they are born into pressing down upon the ideas in their minds – minds already narrow and minds that have not made the journey of the originator of the ideas. . What happens then is these religious ideas get twisted and jumbled, ossified and inflexible, politicized and polemic, until they screech to a halt and become dead-ends—ends in themselves rather than a stage on an ultimate journey. It is like the evolution of life itself – animals that get pulled into a niche because of the needs of the hour become stunted and cannot progress. Their minds are shaped into instinct machines for the one small area of resources they occupy. They are dead-ends in the quest for information or universal truth --and they go extinct by the thousands without ever knowing where they came from, how they were made, where they are going. It is dark, violent, and hopeless for them. Cosmotheism shows why – and the way out. The panorama of life from the tiniest microbe to the largest whale is a great teacher – when a Cosmotheist awakens, it is the thread of life itself in an unbroken chain that awakens. He finds out who he is by looking at the past all around him. Such a man is a figurehead on the ship of life. His mind ascends to universal vision and reason – the “godhead” of religions past. It is easy to see why animal indulgences are called “sin” by the big religions of the past – for minds with this divine potential. Miracle minds. You must be willing to give your life above all other things for truth. Your motives must exist in a hierarchy with the truth motive on top, leading everything. It is also easy to see in the modern age why they spoke about eternity, souls, dangerous illusions, and the path of the creator in the past even when they had less knowledge. These things are real.

I have also studied the origins and philosophy of science. There is a common unifying thread that unites both science and religion. Seeing this basic unity is how you begin to see the elephant whole… quite contrary to our ideas about science and religion as opposites. It was increasingly obvious that “all roads lead to cosmotheism” in the patterns and laws of the universe. I had already discovered one great law of the history of life along the way – organisms that follow undarkened, whole, objective truth are favored by the universe over the longest time spans and across the most environmental obstacles. If you look at evolution as an information process, it becomes quite obvious. Eternal life comes to the universal organism that finds the most eternal truths and principles of the universe (sound like religion yet?). I had these ideas firmly in mind, and felt quite alone because I could find no one writing about these things, when I first read Dr. William Pierce’s writings on the topic. It was absolutely uncanny how perfectly my basic ideas of this topic (which I now call “cosmotheism” as well – I had no words for it back then) matched what he was saying. To me, it was a miracle – an epiphany. Here was a man ostracized and marginalized by the current culture unabashedly speaking about the secrets of the universe. He was part of my own awakening – but to fully open your eyes always puts you on the outside looking in. It made perfect sense that I would find truth spoken about by someone marginalized and persecuted by the current culture. Politics and social pressure was not able to press the levers of fear installed by evolution and shut off thought in his brain. That’s why he could see what I saw. It always seems to be the same way in history – for the founders of religions, and the founders of new ideas in science like heliocentrism, Faraday’s fields, or the germ theory of disease, etc..

Cosmotheism is not just a philosophy, not just a religion, it is the natural culmination of both – the ultimate religion and the ultimate natural philosophy. When alchemy and natural philosophy came together, we began the awesomely powerful science of chemistry. Alchemists (mystically) knew there was great power in combining substances, and science gave them what they needed to unlock the real magic of truth. With cosmotheism, it is science and religion coming together – as they were meant to. It is quite instructive to think about what our ancestors called “natural philosophy” --which later became modern science. Advanced religious minds of the day who engaged in this “natural philosophy” also liked to say they were reading the “other” holy book – the book of nature. I find this quite fitting. In fact, I titled my own cosmotheist – themed book “The Textbook of the Universe: the Genetic Ascent to God” because of this. Most religious ideas of the past are born as relatively naked truth (according to the understanding of the times) – then the blind men set to work, the politics of the day bends the light coming into clear minds over time until they can no longer make out what the origin of the light was in the first place. Most people do not gather enough information to see it. Truth requires gathering information, and truth is what sets a mind free to see the universe as it really is. In this way, in the modern age, cosmotheism is the ultimate religion. And humanity has never been more ready for the real thing.

With that short summary of cosmotheism as I understand it, you can now see exactly what this book is about. Having done that, I will now give you an idea of the particular strengths and weaknesses that I saw in this book. First off, it is the best compilation of William Pierce’s sporadic writings and speeches on the topic over many years. There is no other book like it anywhere. There are only 3 books I know of currently which cover the topic at all. This book, my book, and the universe itself, lol (it’s not exactly crowded in here…). Of the 3, this one is the easiest to read. My book is much more difficult to read and deals with brain science, psychological theory, epistemology, and evolution more (my own background). So this book is it if you want an introduction to these ideas. However, if the average person reads this, they should be warned that it is quite politically incorrect. That comes with the territory… (but then, I do not think any average person will be reading this.). He talks about race a lot. I think he has a valid point there in that truthfully each race has different challenges in this ultimate quest for truth – different landscapes to their motives to overcome etc. It is important to say in general that I do not agree with all the goals and ideas he had about revolution and his brand of politics and getting things done. But they are of course hinted at in this book too (unfortunately). I am more of a theorist and a pure truth-seeker in this regard, and Dr. Pierce was more of a doer. He wrote other completely action-oriented books of this sort and was a man of “action” as he said it in some of his writings about revolution and such. I feel that this was and is counterproductive and quite unnecessary, though I do not blame him for feeling strongly about these things. One of my main objectives in joining the group he started a few times was to head off any such actions (or disasters) any way I could, while cultivating higher knowledge, hope and optimism for the UNIVERSAL sheer power of these ideas. It was frustrating though I must say. The pen IS mightier than the sword! There is nothing sharper, harder, or more effective than the sword of truth. This is something humanity needs to do together or we won’t be able to do it. We need harmony, we need people working together according to their gifts like a symphony, like a higher brain. We need amassed resources and massive computer power. Some of the terminology Dr. Pierce uses is not the same as what I see in this – for example he talks about the “one purpose” and “our truth” a lot, but I would say the truth motive – seeking truth – is the one purpose for us now from which everything else arises, and that this is about “universal truth” not “our” truth. It is everyone’s truth whether they can see it or not. Ultimate collectively-harvested truth. Also, I like to show that this is truly the only way that humanity can ever hope to reach a lasting peace free from all war, ethnic, and religious conflicts. Another topic I emphasize more that he does not talk about very much is that we are already self-selecting. We are already making all kinds of laws and decisions as a society that have selective effects – evolutionary implications – that in the long run can destroy us, and destroy all hope of peace and harmony. I emphasize that we need to be conscious in this. Laws are eugenic systems. We have blind moral urges and urges to punish built in by evolution… and following these blindly is a sin too at times – like following any other urge or instinct without truth as the highest motive. (its like when we just had disgust as an emotion installed by evolution to protect and guide us imperfectly before we developed the germ theory of disease… before we gathered enough information to understand and see true meaning). Ironically, Prejudices installed by evolution are no substitute for science. But you can see that otherwise we came to the same basic ideas that are cosmotheism. Other than that, most religious books have a sort of gratuitous, comforting wooliness to them – as if you can say anything that sounds good as long as you can make it stick together. That is a difference with this book – the ideas are firmly based in natural law. It’s the real deal.

What you will be reading about is the future of humanity in this book. There is really just one path – it is like competing theories in science that way. Eventually you gather enough evidence, enough information, enough truth, and one theory logically stands out. Life is like that – and humankind is the answer to that question. Religion is like that too, really. Our ability to gather truth is our greatest blessing – it allows us to live anywhere. Across deserts, across the south pole, on the moon, in the oceans, on top of the tallest mountains. This means something against the struggles of life through time elucidated by our scientists – it says something. All meaning is built by information contexts and connections between things (much of my book is about how contexts shape meanings in cognitive psychology, etc.). Get enough information together, organized as accurately as possible, and you can see some pretty specific things that were hidden since the beginning of time – such as the periodic table of the elements showing us that there are never before seen elements with certain general properties in the holes in the table we have made from all this information. Today, we are at a threshold in the history of life on Earth – we are at the point of gathering enough information across disciplines to see ultimate meanings in things clearly – previously the province of religions “through a glass darkly”, but no more. (what Edward O. Wilson at Harvard wrote was the “Consilience” – the great coming-together of knowledge in humanity) What we see in this ultimate meaning is cosmotheism. It is a watershed moment in history and this is one of the best books which speaks of these ultimate meanings in the modern scientific universe. Besides that it is really interesting and Dr. Pierce has an engaging style of writing that makes it a good read.

Don't buy this book if you don't have Version 11 of QlikView!
By SirDavid
This book was recommended to me by someone I trust. I bought it mainly on the strength of his recommendation, because I wanted to quickly get up to speed using QlikView. I did also, read the review and the 'Look Inside' text, and decided it looked like it could do the job.

It started off OK. I thought it was reasonably well structured and I generally felt as if I was learning. But as I was working my way through the first chapter, I noticed more and more very basic grammatical mistakes.

For example: "What we see in front of our eyes is the result of the wizard, but what did it really happen?"

I was a little surprised to see these errors, but I concluded I could put up with them as I was making progress. So I continued.

Admittedly, the authors did apologise in advance. Here are the exact words: "PS. This is our first edition and we hope many will follow. We have consciously decided to focus on the content and not to worry too much about syntax and spelling."

There was also another warning which I duly noted, but decided to ignore for the moment. This was: "Please also note that we used QlikView 10 while writing this book. If you are on an earlier or newer version, things might look a little different, but you should still be able to find back the key concepts."

[These are the exact words. So you see what I mean about the standard of English.]

This type of disclaimer is unfortunately common with books about software, and it is something you usually have to learn to live with.

But as I progressed to Chapter 2, this warning very some became a harsh reality. Because I was using QlikView version 11, I was not able to complete the first exercise.

So, I looked to see if I could contact the Authors' or the Publisher. Nothing. So, I looked to see if there was anything on the QlikView forums. There are a few hits, but no clear solutions, that I can see.

So I am rather annoyed with myself for buying this book.

- The English is poor.
- There appears to be no way I can contact the Authors.
- There doesn't appear to be a Publisher I can contact.
- There is no readily available solution to the problem I have encountered in Chapter 2.

So I will have to spend time researching the problem, perhaps I will have to replace version 11 with version 10, if that is possible. I will solve the problem. But, this is a big distraction at this stage. I shouldn't have to do this.

So the bottom line is this:

(1) Don't waste your money buying the current edition of this book, if you have QlikView version 11 or higher.

(2) If there is another edition that covers QlikView version 11 or higher, is it worth having a look at, but beware. Hopefully, they
will have surmounted the problem I am having and hopefully someone would have also corrected their English.

Usable Intro to Qlikview
By Backbutton
Good book for learning Qlikview--and more or less step-by-step. It is as the authors intended, a primer for the new user. As the authors indicated, they are not focused on perfect grammer and writing style--but on content--and it is so.

Writing style and grammer and typos are a bit annoying, but authors admit to that upfront--they are definitely not good writers, and at times one is left to wonder. The screen shots are mostly not legible (at least on Kindle), so are difficult to follow at times. Some matters are not well or completely explained, so reader has to search around a bit and experiment to see what they mean. The beginning of the book is better than the last part of the book, whereby the authors seem to get sloppier or just slapped things together, like running out of steam or interest.

But as an intro, and primer, it is OK.

The 30-Second Elements is a excellent quick read for anyone who has an interest in science, chemistry or the elements. Dr Scerri and the other editors did a wonderful job of presenting poignant facts and interesting stories about the 50 elements they chose for this book. As someone who has taken on the task of reading about the various elements, I still learned a lot about the 50 elements presented in this book. Whether you are a long-time student of chemistry or trying to illuminate the subject to a high school student, this is a great read all around.

A great first half
By Pipistrel
This is very good, but why did they stop at 50? With a two-volume work they could have covered all the elements that really matter. Some of those selected are far from being among the most important or interesting.

The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star, by Nikki Sixx, Ian Gittins

In one of the most unique memoirs of addiction ever published, Motley Crue's Nikki Sixx shares mesmerizing diary entries from the year he spiraled out of control in a haze of heroin and cocaine, presented alongside riveting commentary from people who were there at the time, and from Nikki himself. When Motley Crue was at the height of its fame, there wasn't any drug Nikki Sixx wouldn't do. He spent days - sometimes alone, sometimes with other addicts, friends, and lovers - in a coke and heroin-fueled daze. The highs were high, and Nikki's journal entries reveal some euphoria and joy. But the lows were lower, often ending with Nikki in his closet, surrounded by drug paraphernalia and wrapped in paranoid delusions. Here, Nikki shares those diary entries - some poetic, some scatterbrained, some bizarre - and reflects on that time. Joining him are Tommy Lee, Vince Neil, Mick Mars, Slash, Rick Nielsen, Bob Rock, and a host of ex-managers, ex-lovers, and more. Brutally honest, utterly riveting, and shockingly moving, The Heroin Diaries follows Nikki during the year he plunged to rock bottom - and his courageous decision to pick himself up and start living again.

Van Nuys, 7:30 p.m.

Merry Christmas.

Well, that's what people say at Christmas, right? Except normally they have somebody to say it to. They have their friends and family all around them. They haven't been crouched naked under a Christmas tree with a needle in their arm like an insane person in a mansion in Van Nuys.

They're not out of their minds and writing in a diary and they're not watching their holiday spirit coagulating in a spoon. I didn't speak to a single person today...I thought of calling Bob Timmons, but why should I ruin his Christmas?

I guess I've decided to start another diary this time for a few different reasons...

1. I have no friends left.

2. So I can read back and remember what I did the day before.

3. So if I die, at least I leave a paper trail of my life (nice lil suicide note).

Merry Christmas...it's just you and me, diary. Welcome to my life.

BOB TIMMONS: By Christmas 1986, Nikki had been addicted to heroin and cocaine for at least a year, possibly longer. As a drug counselor, I first met Nikki when M?tley Cr?e's manager, Doc McGhee, called me in to work with the band's singer, Vince Neil. Nikki was initially very hostile to me; he tried to get me barred from going backstage or being around them.

Nikki and I slowly formed a relationship, and early in 1986 he asked me for help with his own addictions. I advised him to go into a rehab center but he refused and said he didn't need to. He was very stubborn on that issue.

Over the years I have worked with platinum-selling artists from the Rolling Stones to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and all points in between, and let me make one thing clear from the start-M?tley Cr?e, more than anybody, wrote the book for decadence and partying. In that area they were the most extreme people I ever met, and Nikki was the most extreme of all. For many years, Nikki had one motto: I'm going to do exactly what I want to do, and fuck everybody else.

Van Nuys, 2:10 a.m.

Jason came over again today. I was touched...so there is a Santa Claus, after all. He came mooching in, with his greasy James Dean hair and his junkie eyes that are sunk so deep in his elongated face that he looks like he's wearing makeup, and he stood by the tree and asked me how my Christmas had been. Like he cares...like he doesn't know already that it was exactly the same as his. Sometimes Jason pisses me off when he tries to make small talk. He asked me how much gear I wanted, and I asked, how much have you got? And he gave me this contemptuous, sneering look and said, that must be nice...

His Betty Page-wannabe Goth girlfriend Anastasia isn't much better. Oh, she's nice enuff, but I know on the inside I'm just her meal ticket to an easier, softer life. I know she tells Jason to jump when I call because she, more than he, wants the money. Not just for the junk, they make enuff off me to maintain their cheap little habits, but she likes to decorate their little one-room rat's nest with the extra money they have left over. That's the real reason she demands he comes at my beck and call...she likes that extra cash for thrift shops and secondhand stores.

I see her as a sorta Suzie Homemaker from Hell, but it's all just a fantasy-she's stuck with a habit too...

NIKKI: My dealer Jason and I had a real love-hate relationship. I loved him because I could pick up the phone and he'd be over in twenty minutes with everything I needed. I hated him because it was killing me. He loved me because I gave him hundreds (sometimes thousands) of dollars on a daily basis. He hated me because I was a spoiled millionaire rock star who could have anything I wanted whenever I wanted it, and usually did.

I used to ride a Honda Shadow motorcycle around the Valleys with my shirt off, totally out of my mind. One time Jason started talking about Harleys and how much he loved them. Tommy had one, so the next day I just went out and bought one and rode it to Jason's house to score. He was furious: it was his dream bike, he'd shown me a picture of it and I'd bought it. He thought I was such a spoiled brat.

Jason was as fucked on heroin as me. He was a tall, skinny guy who in another life could have been a model, or something, but he really just came off looking like a corpse. That was the real reason he hated me: we were both living for drugs, but I could afford as many as I wanted.

Van Nuys, 4:15 a.m.

The best part of freebase is before the first hit. I love that moment, right before I put the glass pipe to my lips...that moment when everything is sane, and the craving, the salivating, the excitement all feel fresh and innocent. It's like foreplay...the ache that's always better than the orgasm.

Yet as soon as I hit the pipe, within 30 seconds all hell breaks lose in my brain...and I keep on doing it and doing it and doing it and doing it, and I can't stop. Every day that I sit here and write, it's always the same. So-why? Why do I do this? I hate it...I hate it so much, but I love it even more.

The worst part of freebase is running out. But I have a new jones-speedballs of any kind. The junk just isn't enough anymore...I feel like I'm only halfway there...

TOMMY LEE: Back around Girls Girls Girls, we were starting to make shitloads of money. With money came success, power, overindulgence and experimentation. Sixx and I, in particular, took a lot of narcotics, and he would always want to push things: "Hey, how about taking these two drugs together? How about heroin and cocaine at the same time?" That period led us to this really dark fucking place. We all went to that place at various times-but Nikki seemed to like it there more than any of us.

Van Nuys, 9:40 p.m.

After I binged last night-or was it tonight-I was convinced yet again that there were people coming to get me. It was more than just shadows and voices, more than just fantasies...it was real, and I was scared to my core.

My bones were shaking...my heart was pounding...I thought I was going to explode. I'm glad I have you to talk to, to write this down...I tried to keep it all together, but then I gave in to the madness and became one with my insanity...

I always end up in the closet in my bedroom. Let me tell you about that place, my closet. It's more than a closet-it's a haven for me. It's where I keep my dope and where I keep my gun. I know when I'm in there I'm safe, at least until I get too high. I can't be out in the house-there are too many windows and I know I'm being watched. Right now it seems impossible that cops are peering in from the trees outside or people are looking at me thru the peeohole at the front door. But when the drugs kick in I can't control my mind...

Today, last night feels like a lifetime ago. But the sick thing is I could do it again tonight.

NIKKI: This was the crazy routine I had at the time. I would start out freebasing or mainlining anywhere in the house: the front room, the kitchen, the bathroom. But as soon as the coke-induced psychosis kicked in, as soon as the insanity began, I would make a beeline for my bedroom closet. That was my refuge. I would huddle in there, surrounded by my drug paraphernalia and guns, convinced that people were in the house trying to get me, or a SWAT team was outside preparing to bust me. I would be too scared to move until I came down. The only way to bring myself down quicker was heroin. Heroin would make the madness go away: it was the easy solution. It seemed to make sense at the time.

Van Nuys, 4:30 p.m.

I've been thinking about last Christmas Eve when I picked up that girl in a strip club, brought her back here on my bike, took her home the next day, then had Christmas dinner all by myself in McDonald's. I haven't made much progress I see.

Today I'm listening to Exile on Main Street, reading, laying around...tanning in the backyard, naked...today I feel like my old self. Sometimes I feel like I have two personalities. One is Nikki and one is...Sikki.

ROSS HALFIN: As a photographer I've shot M?tley Cr?e many times over the years for magazines and got particularly close to Nikki. I remember the first time I ever met him in LA we got on pretty well and decided to go for a drink that night. We sat talking in a booth. Vince Neil was in another booth with a girl, arguing, and Vince suddenly stood up and punched her in the face. I asked Nikki, "Should we sort it out?" And Nikki just laughed and said, "Let them sort it out themselves."

Insight into the life of a shattered rockstar...
By T. LaPonte
In 1987 Motley Crue recorded Girls, Girls, Girls, toured with the then unknown Guns 'n Roses, sold out shows around the country (and world) and partied like they always had a day left to live. The previous book to tell the tale of this excess, The Dirt, felt more like a glorification of the excesses of the band, even though it addressed all the drug abuse Nikki Sixx subjected himself to, subsequent overdoses that almost killed him and reemergence towards a cleaner lifestyle. Basically, you take those chapters of The Dirt and make them their own book and you have The Heroin Diaries.

The book is set up like a diary. In fact, it is a diary: the book accounts the year (Christmas 1986 to Christmas 1987) that Nikki spiraled down a deep hole of addiction and depression and kept insanely careful track of it in a notebook. In addition to his entries (cleaned up a bit so we can understand them), Nikki includes commentary from himself as well as those who were close to him at the time (it's clear that a lot of care and work was undertaken to get all of these voices lined up to tell this story).

I'm reminded of one entry where Nikki says in passing that he had a blast at a radio interview the other night, but probably got the DJ fired. The commentary afterwards is the DJ's account of the debauchery that went down that night (and, yes, he did indeed get fired).

Nikki doesn't pull any punches and asked all of his contributors to do the same. They are brutally honest and help paint a magnificent picture of what it is like to find yourself on a speeding train charging forward into a brick wall. If you ever wanted to know what the rock and roll lifestyle was like, or what it feels like to be addicted to drugs, this is the memoir for you.

It's actually amazing to me that there could possibly have been any lucid entries. We assume of course that a number of them were cleaned up by the editor, but there are times when you are stunned at Sixx's foresight into the future of the industry (the eventual downfall of the hair metal genre by the flood of copycat bands), the future of the band (that they'd make their next record a #1 album) and even his own dim foreboding of the consequences of his lifestyle.

He talks to the diary as if it were a person, as if it were his wife and only confidant in the world during that year (and it probably was). He addresses it with things like, "I have to go to the show now, but I'll see you when I get back tonight." When he departs without an entry for several days (sometimes simply because he is sober and sane) he is always apologetic and makes jokes about how he only writes to it when he is on drugs.

The book pages are broken up with scribblings, notes that presumably came out of the original dairy (To Do lists, lost lyric ideas, notes and the like), drug abuse inspired art and photographs of the people and places addressed, as well as song lyrics from a whole career of Sixx's songwriting. There are Motley Crue songs, songs from his 58 solo album, and songs from bands Nikki has adored in his life and reflect his lifestyle then and now.

Each chapter is a month in the year, with an introduction, intermission and afterward included to set us up, take a break to reflect and plow forward into the future. The afterward in particular is interesting, because in it Sixx explains what happened in his life after that year: getting on and off the drugs, his failed marriages, his struggling band, his solo projects; everything (he calls it his Life After Death). It goes up to and beyond everything covered in The Dirt, and answers a number of niggling questions leftover from that book, like what was going on during the Girls Tour, what did some of the people mentioned in that book think about things discussed (Slash talking about his interactions with Nikki back then and his own struggling band and drug addictions), or whatever had become of certain events (like all that drama with Vanity).

I found myself taking the ups (yes, there were good days) and downs along with Nikki on his ride of drug use, paranoia, rage, attempts at detox, thrills and pitfalls of touring, women, joys of songwriting and love of music, falling off the wagon, struggling on, wondering if he was killing himself, hoping for a way out, dying and coming back to life. I found myself reading an entry, wondering a question about it, and having it answered by the commentary. I also found myself wondering if the now clean and sober Vanity, turned Evangelist, is really any less insane than she was back then. Sure the drugs are gone, but the woman seems like she has a few permanent screws loose (there's one entry where she rambles on about the devil, leaving you thinking, "huh?," and then there's Nikki's commentary under hers going "Huh?" as well: fantastic!).

The book has a message and Nikki Sixx has a hope that by writing this, that by laying his weaknesses bare for the world to see, that maybe that message can get through to people: the tunnel is dark but there is a light at the end, and even though it's probably better if you don't get into that tunnel in the first place, just because you are there doesn't mean there is no hope for you.

I'm definitely sold on this book, as I was already sold on the sountrack weeks ago. I highly recommend it to fans of the band, fans of rock and roll, people interested in learning about the dangers of excess and any open-minded and curious individuals in general. It's a good read all around.

Brutally Honest Look into the Life of Addiction
By cstlife
Kudos to Nikki Sixx and those close to him who were not afraid to be brutally honest about the struggles and madness of addiction as it relates to both the addict, and the people that surround them as well. Nikki bares his soul in this memoir of what it was like to live a year imprisoned in substance abuse and depression. The story is told as a year of actual diary entries that Nikki kept during the Girls, Girls, Girls period of Motley Crue. Nikki's story includes tales of debauchery that includes the members of Motley Crue, Guns n' Roses, Ratt, Vanity, and various others. In between the diary entries, there is commentary from Nikki and the people in his life that explain a little more about the diary entry and what was going on at the time.

I admire Nikki for putting it all out there in the hopes of helping others who may find themselves in the arms of addiction. This book may also help those who have loved ones lost in addiction to have a look into the mind of an addict to get a better understanding of how addiction controls not only the mind, but the body as well.

A great book that'll make you pull your hair out in frustration as you read insights into what Rock n Roll really is about.
By Mr. P. G. Lewis
I picked this book up after reading Motley Crew, The Dirt, and would say first of all, if you've not read that, make sure you do as it's much better in my view.

But that said, this personal account, a year in the life of Nikki Sixx frustrated me, made me laugh out loud, pulled on heart strings and generally was a great book to read.

My reservation, a rating of three stars, comes from the fact that I found the diary entry, as chapters, slightly off putting as they were also followed up with insight / feedback from later dates from the people talked about in the diary entires. Whilst I got used to it, it meant the start of the book wasn't as smooth for me as usual (yes, a strange bit of feedback but feedback nonetheless)..

I'll also remind you that I've read The Dirt and absolutely loved that book more than this one (sorry Nikki!!). But I really did love learning more about Nikki himself and his views (drug addled, sane, absolutely mental and down and out broken that they are)

Basically, if you like Motley Crew, Rock n Roll and books on what it used to be like in the "good ol days" this is one you should read.

Personally, I wish Nikki Sixx all the best in the world as well. I formed a strange bond with him reading these personal diary entries.
