The Anthropology of Globalization: Cultural Anthropology Enters the 21st Century, by Ted C. Lewellen

Lewellen gives us the first analytic overview of an important new subject area in a field that has long been identified with the study of relatively bounded communities. Globalization refers to the increasing flows of trade, finance, culture, ideas, and people brought about by the sophisticated technology of communications and travel and by the worldwide spread of neoliberal capitalism. Unlike dependency theory and world systems analysis, which tended to assume a bird's-eye perspective, globalization offers a down-and-dirty, ground-up approach in which ethnographic research is not marginal but essential.

Through multiple examples, selected from the latest ethnographic research from all over the world, Lewellen examines the ways that globalization impacts migrants and stay-at-homes, peasants and tribal peoples, men and women. A crucial theme is that the global/local nexus is one of unpredictable interaction and creative adaptation, not of top-down determinism. Theoretically, globalization studies have become the focal point for the convergence of interpretive anthropology, critical anthropology, postmodernism, and poststructuralism, which are combined with a tough empiricism. For the casual reader or the classroom, this work draws together the ethnographic studies and cutting-edge theories that comprise the anthropology of globalization.

Good, but requires student pre-existing knowledge
By B. Biglow
I purchased this book to use for a lower level undergraduate course on Globalization and Culture. I thought it would make a good text around which to structure other readings on globalization pertaining to specific indigenous cultures of North and South America. While the chapter headings appear to fit, the level of theoretical knowledge required for the average undergraduate student to use such a text fits for those who have already had a course in theory (leading to a firm foundational understanding of gender and development, identity, and postmodern theory). A lesson learned for adopting a text "sight unseen" (other than an Amazon.com 'Look Inside' preview). As such, this text is more suited to majors in their final semester and graduate level. Bodley's 'Anthropology and Contemporary Human Problems' is probably a more apt fit for undergraduates.

straightforward and in centered on current issues
By Carlos D. Torres
I'm not sure why anyone would rate this book poorly, or say that it is too complicated a read. I am an anthropologist who has read many texts on globalization and this book is as straightforward and contemporaneous as it gets. Lewellen has created a great synthesis of the field of global research with historical foundations that are clear. If you want to get grounded in the subject of globalization, and the problems and issues that researchers face, start here. Yes, it is not a fun read, but the field is in need of a text like this to be able to explain in undergraduate terminolgy, the intricacies of global economic processes.

Delaying the Dream: Southern Senators and the Fight against Civil Rights, 1938-1965 (Making the Modern South), by Keith M. Finley

Few historical events lend themselves to such a sharp delineation between right and wrong as does the civil rights struggle. Consequently, many historical accounts of white resistance to civil rights legislation emphasize the ferocity of the opposition, from the Ole Miss riots to the depredations of Eugene "Bull" Conner's Birmingham police force to George Wallace's stand on the schoolhouse steps. While such hostile episodes frequently occurred in the Jim Crow South, civil rights adversaries also employed other, less confrontational but remarkably successful, tactics to deny equal rights to black Americans.

In Delaying the Dream, Keith M. Finley explores gradations in the opposition by examining how the region's principal national spokesmen -- its United States senators -- addressed themselves to the civil rights question and developed a concerted plan of action to thwart legislation: the use of strategic delay.

Prior to World War II, Finley explains, southern senators recognized the fall of segregation as inevitable and consciously changed their tactics to delay, rather than prevent, defeat, enabling them to frustrate civil rights advances for decades. As public support for civil rights grew, southern senators transformed their arguments to limit the use of overt racism and appeal to northerners. They granted minor concessions on bills only tangentially related to civil rights while emasculating those with more substantive provisions. They garnered support by nationalizing their defense of sectional interests and linked their defense of segregation with constitutional principles to curry favor with non-southern politicians. While the senators achieved success at the federal level, Finley shows, they failed to challenge local racial agitators in the South, allowing extremism to flourish. The escalation of white assaults on peaceful protesters in the 1950s and 1960s finally prompted northerners to question southern claims of tranquility under Jim Crow. When they did, segregation came under direct attack, and the principles that had informed strategic delay became obsolete.

Finley's analysis goes beyond traditional images of the quest for racial equality--the heroic struggle, the southern extremism, the filibusters--to reveal another side to the conflict. By focusing on strategic delay and the senators' foresight in recognizing the need for this tactic, Delaying the Dream adds a fresh perspective to the canon on the civil rights era in modern American history.

Another Side of the Civil Rights Issue
By colinwoodward
They say that when it comes to politics, the House is for offense, the Senate is for defense. That was true around the time of the Missouri Compromise, where the South feared a loss of parity in the Senate, to the Civil Rights era, where Southern senators stalled efforts to pass legislation friendly toward African Americans. In this insightful book, which recently won the coveted Hardeman Prize, Keith Finley explores the efforts by Dixie's senators to delay the passage of civil rights measures. His story begins in 1937, when senators sought to block an anti-lynching bill, to 1965, when the U.S. passed the Voting Rights Act. Finley shows that senators ultimately did not think they could defeat civil rights reform, but they were convinced they could delay it indefinitely. To bolster their efforts, they used arguments that claimed black and white people were naturally inclined toward a separation of the races, which suggested the inherent wisdom in the existing Jim Crow laws. Segregation eventually collapsed, but not for want of effort on the part of Southern senators. They believed action in Congress, not at the state level (which was plagued by race-baiting demagogues), could best maintain de jure segregation. Dr. Finley's well-researched and cogently argued book is must reading for people who want to understand the ideology of white opposition to civil rights legislation as well as the racial attitudes of white Southerners in general in the mid-20th century.

Specters of prejudice passed
By R Anderson
This is an excellent work about a subject that has been avoided too long. The narrative describes the campaigns against providing equal protection under the law to slaves freed at the end of the Civil War, through the expansion of the Ku Klux Klan into a nationwide organization by the 1920s, the national shame of lynchings year by year, the modern Civil Rights movement born in Montgomery in 1954, the massive and coordinated filibuster against the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the cloture vote that finally overcame it. The details are at times startling and the flow of the story is riveting. This work is a "must have" addition to anyone researching the Civil Rights movement and an intriguing read to those who might simply desire to add a measure more of depth and detail to their own studies.

illuminating......
By Eric Wright
This is a story that needed to be told, but until now has only existed in snippets in dozens of southern and civil rights history books. The legislative history of the modern civil rights era is all here. The study is significant because it details how southern U.S. Senators obstructed the struggle for racial equality for more than a generation. Along the way, Finley demonstrates that even 'moderates' whom some historians have labeled 'reluctant racists' , participated wholeheartedly in beating back Senate efforts to attack white supremacy. By taking the story back to the 1930s, Finley clearly shows an evolving southern strategy in the Senate that forestalled civil rights legislation and built coalitions with conservatives elsewhere. The author's judgments are always measured and his treatment is balanced, though he's not afraid to call the Senators to task when their hypocrisy and contradictions require it. Political junkies will especially love Finley's careful treatment of the nuances of Senate rules and regulations.

Gomorrah: A Personal Journey into the Violent International Empire of Naples' Organized Crime System, by Roberto Saviano

The basis of the Sundance TV series Gomorrah
A New York Times Notable Book of the Year

A groundbreaking, unprecedented bestseller in Italy, Roberto Saviano's insider account traces the decline of the city of Naples under the rule of the Camorra, an organized crime network more powerful and violent than the Mafia. The Camorra is an elaborate, international system dealing in drugs, high fashion, construction, and toxic waste, and its influence has entirely transformed life in Campania, the province surrounding Naples.

Since seeing his first murder victim, at thirteen, Roberto Saviano has watched the changes in his home city. For Gomorrah, he disappeared into the Camorra and witnessed up close the drug cartel's audacious, sophisticated, and far-reaching corruption that has paralyzed his home city and introduced the world to a new breed of organized crime.

From Publishers Weekly
Saviano's landmark exposé of the demoralizing effects of organized crime in his homebase of Naples, Italy, is an incredible tale that loses its power in this long-winded reading by veteran Kramer. Droning on in a matter-of-fact tone, Kramer loses the author's personal approach and fails to bring life to the touching memoir. Uninspired and indifferent, Kramer often sounds tired, struggling to keep himself interested, much less the listener. With slurred, often muffled narration, Kramer makes no attempt to engage his audience, a shame considering the rather fervent account that Saviano manages to recreate given his relationship with a deadly organized crime outfit and extensive research into the topic. Listening to Kramer over nine discs becomes a monotonous task rather than the entrancing experience that it should be. An utterly disappointing reading that fails to capture the gusto of Saviano's work. Simultaneous release with the FSG hardcover (Reviews, Aug. 13).

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Saviano, an investigative journalist, uses the port city of Naples as an entry point into the nefarious dealings of the Italian crime network, the Camorra, which has a stranglehold on the global economy through its control of the international clothing market, art collecting, drug dealing, construction trades, and toxic waste disposal. Naples is the epicenter for the criminal cartel since, as Saviano says, "Everything that exists passes through here." At a time when Chinese exports of pet food and seafood have become suspect, Saviano provides a revealing examination of the ways in which black-market profit mongering and lack of regulations ruin workers' lives and endanger us all. This investigation, published in Italy in 2006, became a best-seller and won the Viareggio Literary Prize. It's a stunner of a book, as accessible to American audiences, through its searing style and timely investigation, as it is to Italians. Perhaps most importantly, Saviano's accusations are utterly convincing because of his undercover investigations: in the best Upton Sinclair tradition, he worked at a Chinese textile factory in Naples, at a construction site, even as a waiter at a Camorra family wedding. Throughout, he relies on the significant detail to carry his outrage: scores of frozen Chinese bodies spilling out onto a dock; the sight of a Chinese factory worker at the bottom of a well, beaten and stabbed to death after refusing sex with her boss. Through his firsthand observation and interviews, he lays bare the abuses fed by this well-oiled and well-hidden criminal system. Devastating. Fletcher, Connie

International Organized Crime in and out of Italy today
By Chris
This book is an extremely engrossing read about the real world of high stakes organized crime operating in and out of Italy today. It will have tremendous appeal to real life crime fighters and mob aficionados across the world, not to mention anyone with generational ties to Italy as a homeland. Well written and extremely informative, it engages the reader in a tell-all approach of the extensive world wide implications of organized crime originating in and out of Naples today. Graphic and disturbing, it gives factual details only an `insider' would have access to. Particularly fascinating is the increasingly large part women play in the leading role of organized family clans. `The Godmother', if you will. One could only imagine a blockbuster film coming out of this information. This reader would have preferred more details about how the writer actually infiltrated `The System' but perhaps that will be a follow up to this amazing read.

One of the most important books from Italy in the last 50 years
By Enrico Ferorelli
Gomorrah is not a compilation of news clippings on the subject of the Mafia or better the Camorra.
It's the result of years of heroic work by a young writer that has devoted himself to the understanding of the criminal world that developed in the area around Naples .
The scope and range of the illegal activities are world wide and control the world of fashion, construction, drugs, food, toxic waste, and almost any form of commercial endeavor. The message is a portent of things to come where the claws have not reached yet. The courage of the writer has put him in life danger for the rest of his life and and under constant police protection. The valor of his pen is as great as the beauty of his prose. I can not recall any book that has moved me so deeply in a long time. The story is not only a requiem for the Italian nation but also
a heads up for the rest of the world where the connections with the Italian Camorra are blossoming: that is China, Australia, Central and South America, Africa and obviously the US.

From Tiberio's Leap
By Alvaro Lewis
Behold here an unfashionable and stirring book. The pages drip with the residue of disfiguring communications left by hitmen on the lifeless bodies of their victims. I do not go in for glamorized violence and I do not watch movies with guns. Still, I turned pages of this grisly book because its message is both fascinating and urgent. The scores of deaths described are countable but only a partial number. What waste. The mafia clans of Campania, whose fractions divide business by terror, account for the fear they inspire with their omnipresent success. It is bizarre to read of this smothering and ultimately corrupting system that renovates, enriches and destroys as it spreads.

A marginal insider, Savinio here unloads the weight of his learning and the roar of his disillusionment. His book puts to pasture the works that would try to rival it as discourses or discoveries on the nature of power in society. Fans of Foucault have no idea what power is about until they have read this book. The same goes for the armchair aficionado of corporate monopoly. Much of the information Savinio relates he has gathered as an inhabitant or curious, casual employee of the clans that run Italy from the graced and volatile realm of Campania.

The first chapter on the port of Naples is likely to unsettle anyone who lives near a port of entry by sea, as it shows how illegal goods make it from sea to secrecy and to the market. The chapter called "Cement" demonstrates the relationship between contractors, bids, bias and regional economy. These two chapters alone seem to be stunning achievements. The final chapter treats the horrifying management and crippling dispersion of toxins through land, sea and air for the sake of immediate profit. There are chapters that address the subjects of women, religion, fashion, film and clan supremacy.

Saviano sheds light not on numbers and accounts but on names and traces. In the face of such an overwhelming and entrenched corruption the only power a writer or citizen can exercise in behalf of the common good is to name the names. Those who speak the truth run mortal risk but only the brave who take up that risk protect the multitude from fear, abuse, and destruction. I commend the inspiring bravery of this author and the skill with which he unwinds the horrors of our twisted realm.
