An unusual artistic technique--live animals set against painted backdrops--illustrates 16 Mother Goose rhymes. In ``Old Mother Hubbard,'' a shaggy dog and a few props (broom, child's chair, shiny tin can) have been photographed on a painted background that shows a cupboard mounted on a wall and a few frying pans on pegs, so that it looks like a scene in a play. The tone varies: While most of the paintings maintain a hushed, staged quality, ``The Cat and the Fiddle'' includes a cartoonish dish and spoon that remind readers of the artifice involved. As in Anne Geddes's books, the pictures will be more appreciated by adults than children, and possibly more suited to postcards than for rhymes available in other volumes. Charming art, but don't let the title fool you! This book is not appropriate for children!

I like the art a lot, but the choice of nursery rhymes is twisted and terrible! "Old Mother Hubbard" whipped her children soundly; an old man is thrown down the stairs in "Goosey, Goosey, Gander" for not saying his prayers; a little boy tries to drown a cat in "Ding, Dong Bell;" and in "Little Bo-Peep" the tails of her lambs are hung up to dry, which "made her heart bleed." Just because nursery rhymes are traditional does not mean they are particularly good or need to be republished! I think the artist could have found much more suitable, less violent nursery rhymes to base her art on. I would definitely not recommend this book for children.

This book is a star

A gorgeous book of popular nursery rhymes with the real star being the illustrations.
Each double page features photographs of an animal set against a brightly painted background.
My 1 year old son loved this book so much that we had to borrow it six consecutive times from our local library.
From admiring this book he now oinks, barks, quacks and baa's - but we are still having troubles mastering the sound of a koala!
A lovely addition to any child's library - we are eagerly awaiting the reprint.

Love the pictures and short poems!

This book is perfect for age 1+. This book has several short nursery rhymes and big, bright, beautiful pictures. My one year old loves this book and pointing out all the animals she knows on each page. The rhythmical lyrics also help her fall fast asleep. :-)

This is an incredible work! So practical and applicable. Wow! It gave voice to many principles in the gospel that I knew were true, but didn't know how to articulate them. It builds and enriches anyone's perspective on the gospel regardless of background. I have loaned my copy to several friends and all found it insightful. Some of my friends are adult converts (of many years) and they particularly enjoyed the explanations and perspective it gave them. Also it helps see beyond some of the elements of Mormon culture and how the gospel really is for everyone regardless of background. For me it has also helped me discover areas that I want to be better at and the tools to recognize priorities of what to work on within my life. Dr. Anderson does a fabulous job of mixing examples from life and her experience as a clinical therapist that illustrate perfectly gospel principles. It is an enjoyable read because you are constantly recognizing how so many principles truly do apply to our lives. This book will touch your life and give you a deeper appreciation for this experience we are all going through and the ability to truly choose Glory! --Julie

About the Author
Lili DeHoyos Anderson is the mother of 8 children. She graduated from BYU in sociology just before the birth of her first child. She was a stay at home mom and then after raising her children decided to go back to school for her Doctorate in Marriage, Family and Human Development. She is a licensed clinical social worker and is a counselor.

Worth choosing.

I've already purchased additional copies to send to family members, aside from loaning out my own copy.

Dr. Anderson's book is elegant, pragmatic, and immediately applicable. She treats the subject in a conversational-but no-nonsense-tone that makes sense, and can work for anyone who will take the time to apply the principles.

It is by no means a pie-in-the-sky work, and I think that's great, especially given the number of Latter-Day Saints who seem to despair over all their imperfections, and don't realise that they're trying to jump past the "Can't skip" step that she discusses.

Her insights into human behaviour are right on the money. She's very realistic about the fact that people have faults, while being neither condemning, nor lowering expectations of our potential as children of God.

I'm more than a little glad I bought this book, grateful for the new way of looking at things that it offers. It's always great to get a fresh view of the gospel, and how it applies in one's life.

Thought provoking

Choosing Glory introduced a perspective on the gospel of Jesus Christ I had not considered until reading the book. It added to and enriched my current understanding, rather than challenging and changing my current gospel knowledge. In summary, I feel Dr. Anderson has added additional "light" to guide me on my journey back to God's presence.

Very helpful book

Dr. Anderson's book opened my eyes to better ways of handling situations. I wish she had written this book years ago. Her explanation of healthy boundaries is very helpful. Her engaging and straightforward style made this a real page-turner for me. I bought copies of the book for several family members, neighbors and friends--it's that good.

The chapter on how to be anxiously engaged without being anxious is spot on. It teaches how to reduce unnecessary stress. Dr. Anderson articulates her ideas so well that I can "picture" in my mind the various scenarios she discusses--particularly the refreshments after a meeting being set out by the men on a table with no tablecloth and ice cream sandwiches being served out of the cardboard boxes they came in. Her humor makes this chapter a great read.

All the chapters make sense. This is a very special book that I highly recommend.

About the Author

Phyllis Heath is a professor in the Department of Human Environmental Studies at Central Michigan University. She has also taught courses for Michigan State University in Okinawa, Japan. She was educated at the University of North Carolina at Asheville where she received a B.A. in Psychology. At the University of North Carolina at Charlotte she earned a MA in Human Development and Learning. She received a PhD in Child Development and Family relations at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Her research has focused on the ways in which parental attitudes and behaviors affect children’s social competence, factors influencing parenting patterns, and more recently, the links between parenting behaviors and adolescent depression. She has also explored beliefs and behaviors of parents in indigenous cultures in Oaxaco, Mexico and in South Africa.

wonderful book

I needed this book for a collge class but kept it for a while after the class was over to reread it. The book is rich on information about developmental stages, age-related problems, different family situations, etc.
The book also raises awareness about cultural differences in child rearing or family situations. It's a good book to read for parents, yet I think it's more geared towards social workers or psychologists.

Read this book for my parent child relations class and I learned so much from it. Some of the things are repetitive but overall, it is a really nice book and very interesting.
