The Rourke saga continues now with Michael Rourke striving to lead America back from the precipice of a liberal agenda toward the formation of a responsible government, accountable to the people. However, he has been painted as a psychological maniac killer and his wife, Natalia, is viewed as an unsuitable First Lady because of her past as a KGB operative. An alien force, The Coalition, is trying to destroy the planet and yet still another alien group is staged, waiting for their chance to take control of Earth's human population. Traitors within the human race have aligned with both sides, and the Rourke family is once again thrust "into the breach." It seems that no matter how far into the future you travel, some things never change, there are just new faces being worn by evil. John Thomas Rourke knows, “It always pays to plan ahead.” If he fails, Earth's population has only two futures—extinction or slavery. Which will it be?

About the Author
Jerry Ahern (Axel Kilgore) is a science fiction and action author best known for his post-apocalyptic survivalist series The Survivalist. These pulp novels have sold more than 3.5 million copies worldwide. He also authored the gut-wrenching, action packed series, “They Call Me the Mercenary” under the pseudonym Axel Kilgore. Along with his wife, Sharon, he is co-author of over eighty internationally-published novels. Originally born in Chicago a long time ago, Sharon Ahern met her future husband and co-writer, Jerry Ahern, on the very first day of High School, and they became friends for life. Sharon began her writing career in the public relations department of Illinois Bell Telephone and stringing for a local newspaper. Always an avid researcher, she was happy to pull out the Britannica (and later the Internet) and become an instant expert on whatever information Jerry needed for a story. Today she co-writes with Bob Anderson to continue the dramatic line of the popular Survivalist series. Bob Anderson is the author of Sarge, What Now? and co-author on The Survivalist series (starting with Book #30) in collaboration with Jerry and Sharon Ahern. Bob is a fine writer and has published books such as TAC Leader: What Honor Requires, Anderson's Rules and Grandfather Speaks. He is an expert on weaponry and military skills and is an accomplished public speaker. Bob retired as a Chief Master Sergeant from the United States Air Force Reserve with over 32 years of service.

#30 was bad but this is worse.......
By Michael R. Wilson
I was too kind in my last review of the continuation of this series and this installment makes me wonder if the five star reviewers of this book ever bothered to read any of those written by Jerry Ahern at all.

One cannot even get through page one of this the 31st book in the series without confronting the fact that someone seems to have forgotten what happened at the end of book #30, which was bad enough for it seems that the John T Rourke, the man that always "planned ahead" was caught with his britches down unarmed at his son's inauguration as President and forced to use weapons that were not his own. Right there though on the first page we find at the end of the second paragraph that he neutralized the sniper who injured him after a distraction from Mann (unmentioned) with "three shots from his Detonics 45" - (not his ScoreMaster, not his Combat Master not even his Barami Hip-Gripped Centennial 38) - but a review of page 154 in book #30 we find, the passage "Not a Detonics, but right now beggars can't be picky". Is anyone proof reading these books for continuity at all?

It has been bad enough as a fan of the Survivalist's series to have lost Mr. Ahern but to have taken his life's literary work and continued it forward without even having reviewed the manner in which he has faithfully, not always perfectly, but consistently written, down the path they have chosen is paramount to sacrilege and it dishonors his memory. There was a natural ending to the series with Death Watch and real fans of these books should do themselves a favor and stop there.

I picked book #1 off the shelf a couple weeks ago and re-read the whole series, in order, all the way through to #29 and although I had tried to get through #30 and #31 last year when I bought them I just could not ignore the fact that the plot and tenor of the series had taken a decided and bizarre turn into the realm of UFO's, old cliches, internet platitudes and simply fillers gathered up from comedians jokes I never cared for in the first place; all because the current authors or author hasn't a clue about the character or the plot direction he should be taking the series in. Making up a sword called "Beloved Treasure" for the Akiro clone and JTR kneeling on one knee to give it to him, what the heck kind of crap is this - gag me with a spoon, but this is not the character I read about in previous 29 books and certainly not something Rourke would ever do - at least not with all this liberal touchy, feely sensitive BS.
Even the manner in which his guns are referred to are different and a constant reminder to this fan of the series that I should NOT have to force myself to read through the gunfighters prayer and the other garbage stolen from emails and internet gun forums providing fillers in place of creative writing.

Someone should inform the author that phrases like "John carried his standard CAR-15, his twin Detonics 45, and the Magna-ported and Metalifed Colt 357 Python at the small of his back." is NOT the manner in which it has ever been written. John has 2 sets of Detonics pistols, the Combat Masters and the ScoreMasters - which is he carrying here? and when has he ever carried the Python in the small of his back when that's where the Centennial Hip-Grip and the AG Russell is supposed to be as he has a proper holster for the Python. Given the situation here - where he has just berated a general for suggesting the use of energy type weapons useless against suits worn by the bad guys why would he have dumped the H&K 91 308 caliber he'd been carrying in favor of the less powerful CAR 15 5.56mm - HE WOULDN'T!

grrrrrrr it really sucks when readers know more about the characters of a book and story than the yahoo writing it - apologies for the rant here but I will burn these last 2 installments and be buying no more as they are an embarrassment to the original Jerry Ahern series.

Such a sub par book unfortunately.
By King Reviewer
My wife and I have been HUGE fans of this series since its very first book in the early 80s. So when we saw that there were two new ones since the mid 90's, we were stoked.
The first one was OK, but had much room for improvement. So we took another chance on this next one, despite almost no reviews.
And after reading this one, we can see why. Instead of improving, it got worse. We really wanted to love it, but this new author seems to like to take his hopefully growing readership to school classes we don't wish to go to.
Very preachy and telly, not an author who learned the first lesson in writing class: show don't tell.
We noticed very few reviews even for the next two books.
For a book series in the apocalyptic genre that used to lead and be extremely popular, it seems without Jerry, that time has passed.
I think with a far superior action/adventure writer this series can rise from the ashes.
But not seemingly with this one.
Sorry, Bob. You got our hard earned money twice, but that's it.

Wait, what - really? What's the U.S.S. Defiant (from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) doing on the cover of this book?
By RG
I'm really curious as to why a very well-known vehicle from the 'Star Trek Universe' is on the cover of a Survivalist novel? I realize the direction of the series is now 100% into the realm of pure science fiction, but this is ridiculous...
