Great Book

I use this book on a daily basis and find it invaluable to what I do. Some of the examples don't work but if you get past that the explanations are useful and boiled down enough for the busiest of DBA's to absorb. Interestingly this is a text book at a Major University.

database audit is an important subject. The author does not cover data masking though which is important in combination with database security

This book is ok. Nothing too impressive. It feels a lot like some of the other books in this series or by this person. Not sure really, I had a risk management one and they seem to repeat a lot of the same ideas. I guess that is what security is? The same problems ;)

The author writes with a strong realistic style, peppered with many details.

Kevin has headed to Austin to start a new life with his brother Jack who is married to Tito. The two men own a bar and Kevin has agreed to work as the bouncer there. He's a big man and it's not a difficult job. After Kevin's disastrous affair with Larry, a guy he was supposed to marry, he is surprising himself by checking out the local talent.

Now there was a guy who could put the hitch back into my giddyup.

Kevin is into signs, as in signs from some higher power, which is cute but a little strange. Good sign - the smell of coffee; bad sign- snow dripping down his neck when he was thinking about his ex. As this story is told in first person from Kevin's point of view, you get all of them. But he has quite a romantic turn of phrase.

I hoped for a new life here...and for a man to kiss me as though he would be shipwrecked without me.

Because Tito was a boxer with a mean ex-wife, when he hits a guy who had been hitting his wife, Kevin takes the charges for him. He also gets involved in a threesome with two of the bar waiters - he's having fun, sort of, but he can't help but be attracted to this cop (Cruz) who seems to keep turning up at all sorts of weird places, like the airport, the drycleaners and places like that. The kids business was really hard to read - I hate hearing about mother's who use their children as pawns in some sick game about money, and Tito's ex was the worse in my opinion.

The relationship between Cruz and Kevin was hard to get a handle on - not only because of the two waiters who were still in on the action, but also because we only get the story from Kevin's point of view. I would have loved to have known what Cruz thought when he saw Kevin for the first time, or how he reacted to the lack of phone calls. The issue with the children did get sorted, thanks to Cruz, and that was one positive, but if you are looking for escapism, this probably isn't the book for you. The author writes with a strong realistic style, peppered with many details about Austin itself, which was interesting, but I found the character connection that I was looking for hard to find.

Kevin is moving to Austin to help out his brother and his husband. Kevin's life fell apart after his partner left him. He's down on his luck looking for a sign that everything will be okay. He's hoping that he'll find that sign in Austin.

Jack (Kevin's brother) and Tito own a bar/restaurant and want Kevin's help to work as a bouncer. They are in a huge custody battle of Tito's children and need a little more flexibility in the schedules. He is hoping to find a love like his brother's, something he knows he never had with his ex-partner. Can he find the man of his dreams in the great state of Texas or will he end up the middle of a man sandwich?

The Bouncer was an enjoyable read. I loved Tito and Jack. I was intrigued by Tito's situation and his kids. Kevin wasn't that stand out character for me. Yes he is the MC but I found myself more interested in the supporting characters. I have read this author before and would definitely recommend.

I enjoyed the story

I’m just not sure how to review this, I enjoyed the story, Kevin reconnecting with his brother meeting his brother’s husband, the staff, the kids. The love interest with the Dixon even the funny scenes around town and driving.

The menage between the charaters was sexy and the fact that Kevin seems to be horny for anything male was fun.

The sub story of then all trying to help Tito get his kids back was sweet, and by the end you are really gunning for Tito and the kids.

My big issue, it seemed like to me, was this could have used another edit or some more polishing. It felt a little jumpy. Kept thinking, how did we end up here or did that just finish?

WILL SOMEONE LET THE WOMAN SPEAK?

What "improvements" have been made for the Berkley edition? There are already major differences in punctuation, word choices, and scene breaks between the original Collins and Dodd Mead (HICKORY DICKORY DEATH) editions of this novel. There are further differences between the Dodd Mead editions republished by Random House/Avenel and the Dodd Mead editions republished by Simon & Shuster/Pocket. There are further differences still in the Signet, Bantam, and Black Dog & Leventhal editions. For every publishing house putting out her works, there seem to be a new batch of editors altering Agatha Christie's words and the sound of her voice. What's the matter with these publishers? Whose voice do they think we want to hear when we sit down to a novel by Agatha Christie? And what will she sound like twenty years from now? It's frightening that her estate has failed to see the importance of guarding her words as she wrote them. Please tell me I'm not the only one here who senses that a crime has been committed.

Miss Lemon shocked Poirot by making errors and....

revealing that she has a sister! Poirot had never before considered that his incredibly efficient secretary could be so human. Miss Lemon's sister was responsible for the errors as well, there were troubling things taking place in her life. There were thefts taking place at the youth hostel where she worked. Poirot decided to look into the matter as a favor to Miss Lemon and so he could restore the order in his own life.
Poirot begins his investigation of the hostel and its residents but before he can solve the rash of petty thefts a murder occurs, a murder that is only the first of a series. The trail leads Poirot and the police into a world of smuggling with side trips through young love and family secrets.
In typical Christie fashion the clues are all laid out for the reader to follow. There are red herrings to confuse the armchair detective - perhaps a few too many in this one - and of course, the usual Christie 'twist' at the end.
It is often suggested that a writer should write about what they know and this book points out that Christie didn't know very much about unversity students in the mid-fifties. The characters do not come to life in this one they way they do in most of her other books. Keeping the various students/suspects sorted out it difficult because they really aren't very memorable. Also this one seems to suffer from too much - too much plot drug AND gem smuggling, too many red herrings and too many conincidences.
It should be noted that this book was originally written in 1955 and certain parts are very much representative of that time. Stereotypes of Italians, blacks, Indians, Cockneys etc are all present and tend to make the 21st century reader cringe.
Even though this is not one of Christie's masterpieces it is still an excellent read, thoroughly challenging and enjoyable.

A Good Primer for Pastoral Counseling and Psychoanalysis

I rate this book with three stars because it is slightly dated and officiously written. However, if you have any interest in pastoral counseling and psychoanalysis, this book serves as a good primer as it covers comprehensively many of the standard issues in these disciplines.

As it relates to the book seller, the book arrived soon after my purchase and its condition is commensurate with the seller's claims.

This book is very useful for trainees in psychiatry. It was recommended to me by my long term psychotherapy supervisor. It is a good introductory reading to the world of psychotherapy. The only thing I did not like about the book is the author not using many references when developing his ideas, although at some point he talks about the "obsession" of MDs to have "hard data" and that psychotherapists should feel comfortable dealing with ambiguity and limited scientific evidence given the nature of their practice.

About the Author
Tsukasa Fushimi (born 1981) is a Japanese author of light novels. He made his debut in 2006 with the novel series Jūsanbanme no Alice. This was followed in 2008 by his well-known novel series Oreimo, which spawned a media franchise encompassing multiple manga, anime and video game adaptations. In 2013, Fushimi began writing his novel series Ero Manga Sense. The author lives in Tokoyo, Japan.

More Oreimo for the fans.

The second volume of the Kuroneko Oreimo spin-off, it follows the "True Path" that the first Anime season showed in 4 OVA episodes. The manga goes into greater detail regarding Kuroneko ( Real name Rori Goku ) and her attending the same school as Kyousuke as the two become involved in the Game Creation Club and slowly get to know each other.

What else is there to say? Continues the style of the previous works quite well leading into the second story arc part of oreimo, more focusing on Kyousuke's interactions with Kuroneko (Ruri) after Kirino leaves for America.

About the Author
Bill Menzies is widely known in Pentecostal and evangelical circles as a statesman, building bridges across denominational and racial divides. He was one of the organizers of the Society for Pentecostal Studies and was the first editor of the society's journal, Pneuma. He was also one of the editors for the Full Life Study Bible and a consulting editor for Christianity Today. He held teaching and administrative positions at Central Bible College (Springfield, Missouri), Evangel University (Springfield, Missouri), the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary (Springfield, Missouri), California Theological Seminary (Fresno, California) and Asia Pacific Theological Seminary (Baguio City, Philippines). Menzies' dissertation at the University of Iowa became the benchmark history of the Assemblies of God, Anointed to Serve (GPH, 1971). He was a prolific author, authoring or editing standard textbooks such as Understanding the Times of Christ (GPH, 1969), Bible Doctrines: A Pentecostal Perspective (GPH, 1993) and Spirit and Power (Zondervan, 2000).

A Concise Pentecostal Theology

Contained within this well organized volume is the core of Pentecostal theology and a must read for anyone who seeks to better understand pentecostalism. Each of the sixteen doctrines, supported sufficiently with scripture, is presented within a theological framework . An example of such a framework, for the doctrine The One True God, would be the classical arguements given since medieval days for the existence of God (chapter 2). A nice plus is found at the end of each chapter where the authors have provided study questions to help insure the reader's comprehension of the material. Menzies and Horton have created a work that serves two purposes: first, as a resource for general theological knowledge; and, second, as a specific doctrinal reference for the Assemblies of God. Thus "Bible Doctrines - A Pentecostal Perspective" is an excellent addition to the library of the serious Bible student.

Brief Introduction to the Assemblies of God Doctrines

The Assemblies of God is the world's largest classical Pentecostal denomination in the world with over 40 million members worldwide. It is also the largest missionary movement in history of humanity.
However, all of this has evolved from the Assemblies of God Statement of Fundamental Truths written in 1914 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. This short volume covers those sixteen truths. Each truth is covered in only 4 to 5 pages. But don't let that stop you from reading this book for a brief introduction to the Pentecostal teachings.
Finally, one word about the "saint" and his comments about the Holy Ghost and the Assemblies of God. The Assemblies of God is not a holiness-Pentecostal movement but grew out of mainly ministers from the Baptist, Presbyterian, and Christian & Missionary Alliance churches. The Assemblies of God stance on entire sanctification is one of progressive sanctification from their Baptistic roots. In fact, the only real differences between Southern Baptist and the Assemblies of God is their view on Spirit-Baptism and eternal security. The Assemblies of God is Arminian in its theology but not Wesleyan in many other points of doctrine.

Useful for ministers and laypeople

There are not many books that I read and reread nor reread a third time. However, Bible Doctrines by William Menzies is one of those books. No, it's not necessarily because it contains a riveting story or dialogue. In fact, it can be somewhat theologically dense; but, the book is invaluable. I first read through this book in Bible college as a syllabus requirement. Okay. Fine. I'll read it. I read it through a second time as a prepared for my licensing in the Assemblies of God. I absorbed it more. I understood its importance. I recently completed my third reading as I prepare for ordination. And, honestly, it is exciting. Yes, it's theology and doctrine, but it's founded in Scripture. It offers a concise understanding of the Pentecostal experience.

Throughout the book, Menzies walks us through the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God and offers a more in-depth study as the chapter continues. By the end of the book, you will have a firmer understanding on theological topics such as the authoritative rule, the One True God, the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ, the fall of man, the salvation of man, the ordinances of the Church, the baptism in the Holy Spirit, the initial physical evidence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit, sanctification, the Church and its mission, the ministry, divine healing, the blessed hope, the millennial reign of Christ, the final judgment, and the new heavens and the new earth. You might be exhausted just reading the list, and, yet, Menzies takes these theological issues and breaks them into chewable portions. At the conclusion of the book, a glossary and index are also provided for easier study. I can't recommend this book enough. If you are studying for the ministry, you have to get this. If you are a layperson searching out more information on the Pentecostal perspective, this is the book to pick up.
