Action Packed Military, Science Fiction

I really enjoyed this book. While there could have been a little more character development, the author did a pretty good job of creating characters that were clear cut and likeable. The action was intense, and the battles were bloody. But the battles were more than men versus aliens. This was a coming of age story as a privileged young man learns what war and loyalty are all about. In the crucible of war and brutality, Sheridan learns that political appointments and prestige have little real value. He learns about loyalty, honor and love.

Light version of the gritty Gaunt Ghost series.

In my humble opinion, it reads like a light version of a Warhammer 40K Gaunt Ghost series. Less gritty but still full of its own story. It's basically an underdog & coming of age story for the main character which I like. The action sequences are good. Maybe a little bit more develop in space battles for future books but overall satisfactory. Characters are developed at a nice pace & the author is not afraid of killing off characters that I though would have to survive until the end.

Good start. Looking forward to Book 2.

A good book that hangs together and kept my interest. Could use a proofreaders help. A few too many spelling and grammatical errors but none that are outstanding. The author could try finding a retired English teacher to check out his work before he publishes the book if he can't afford to hire a professional. In any case I will try some more of his book. I like space operas.. Technical fanatics might not like this type of book.

In a country where woman are still essentially bought or bartered, the princess (real name withheld) is justifiably fearful when the family realizes she is the subject of the 1992 expos{‚}e, Princess: A True Story of Life Behind the Veil in Saudi Arabia. If this book has a thesis, it is a line the princess uses to describe the troubles her own daughters are going through as they try to assert themselves in the male-dominated society: "When normal is forbidden, people fall into the abnormal." With religious police watching over their morals, one wonders just how more "abnormal" these people and their country can be. The answer: quite a bit. This book, both fascinating and depressing, shows that women are much less than second-class citizens in Saudi society. Brian McCombie

After reading the first book about Princess Saltana (Princess) I knew that Daughters would be fascinating. And it is! The book discusses her 2 daughters and 1 son and picks up where her last book left off. Her youngest daughter is a devout Muslim with an extremely oppressive mentality towards her society. Her second child is a wild child by Saudi standards but her mother loves her just the same. And Princess Saltana's oldest child, her son is as compassionate and liberated as his mother. She raised him well. This story takes place in Saudi Arabia where women are treated as second class citizens. The men use their religion to justify all sorts of heinous crimes which is sickening when I thick about it. These men who degrade women are cowards but they get away with anything they want. In the USA they would be called pedophiles and locked up in jail. But in Saudi Arabia they are free to do exactly as they please. This is also about a country that regards wealth and physical attributes of the most important things in life, money and sex go hand and hand. And women are treated as property to gain social and economic power. Princess Saltana is a heroine for telling her story, even though her family found out about her first book. She is also a heroine for preaching women's rights in a land that has no rights for women. She is a heroine because she sees hope in the future for the women of her country. The book isn't only about her daughters it is also about Princess Saltana's life and family. She is a deeply moving person with a lot of conviction. And I can only hope that one day all the women in her country will be treated with the basic human rights that they all deserve - but do not have. I just found out there is a third book about Princess Saltana titled Princess Saltana's Circle, I am sure it will be an interesting read too. Also I want to say that Jean Sasson is a genius and a brilliant writer!

I read "Princess" in 1991 - twice in two weeks--read again Nov 2001 and am now reading for the 4th time. ALL of Jean Sasson's books are difficult to put down. Princess Sultana is one courageous and brave woman. Thank goodness there is a royal who is willing to fight for women rights to go forward in The Mid-East countries. There is much humor in the Princess series--especially with Sultana's daughters and that EVIL brother of hers--but he is a product of that culture. I can't wait for each of Jean's Sasson's books to come out. ALL of them are fascinating.

Fascinating view into another Culture.

We live in a world where the terms Muslim and Islam are thrown around in the press and almost always with little understanding of the culture and traditions implied in and by the terms. I, myself, am widely read, extremely open and tolerant of others, but know less than I should about the religion of Islam or the culture being lived around the world by Muslim people. I am also increasingly interested in women's issues as a grandmother of 5 granddaughters witnessing the Talibanization of uber right Conservative Christian elements in our society.

This book is written by an American author, but in the words of a Saudi Princess, who is carefully anonymized, but who is herself of the newer generations who seek to throw off some of the oppressive elements of their Muslim culture which is very controlling and punishing of women.

There are 3 books in this series, and all are absolutely fascinating looks into a world that I, as an American, could not even imagine. First of all Saudi royalty is a place I will never know. But the predominance of the oppression of women, even among the wealthy who are in some ways above some of the rigidity of it all, is incredible. I had no idea the culture of genital mutilation of females was such a prevalent part of the culture. But that is not the focus of the book - still it is part of the culture and is emotionally upsetting to consider. It puts a new complexion on the efforts in our country to try to use religion to force women into a second-class position controlled by men, whose goal is not loving enhancement of the experience of life for their women, but domination and management of women to fulfill their own male aims/wants and desires. Equality is a hard thing, but it is infinitely desirable compared to dominance and oppression.

I have read the first and second books, this book is #2, the first is Sultana, the second this book and the third, Princess Sultana's Circle. I am just beginning book 3 and the effect of reading to this point has been very broadening, educational, concerning, and expanding of my consciousness. The writing style is excellent. The subject matter is what it is and as I say, interesting and consciousness raising.

I highly recommend this series of three books.

Easy Classical Guitar Duets: Book/CD Pack

I like this collection of duets, especially the last (and most difficult one), "Pavane, Op.50" by Gabriel Faure. Incredibly beautiful. I have played it many times (even with Charles Duncan himself). However, I don't let the fact that I know him personally and have played many duets with him over the years influence my opinion of his books. As a matter of fact, I have dissed a couple of them.

The duets progress from very, very easy (great for newbie guitarists) to higher levels of difficulty. Each piece is also broken down by parts (1st guitar and 2nd guitar parts) by level of difficulty. I teach classical guitar and use these duets frequently to teach my students how to play with another guitarist. The pieces in the book are all very good pieces written by famous composers (Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Dowland, etc...) but of course they have been greatly simplified for inexperienced guitarists, but are still very lovely to listen too.

The CD that comes with it is very helpful to play along with so that the guitar student can practice either part with the recording and get a good feel for his/her part. I haven't tried using my PC to play the CD yet so I don't know about that problem mentioned in the previous review, I've just played it in my boom box and it sounds great.

Just remember that it is a book of EASY duets. If you are wanting some intermediate or advanced scores, this book won't have them. I recommend this book to beginning guitarists. The notation is clear, NO TAB (yeah!) and helpful fingerings are given.

CD DOESN'T PLAY

I presume the manufacturer is intensionally selling defective, unplayable cd's because of other revues indicating this same fact. Amazon was supposed to follow up on this complaint, but I never received a response to my conversation with an Amazon rep. This is the first time I've ever been dissatisfied with any product I've bought thru Amazon.

Gives a great detailed look on the ups and downs of Urban development locally and nationally. It's well written, and extremely easy to follow. Packs a lot of background information by the authors into the reasons behind many of our struggles and accomplishments today. Reflects the plights of the poor with the demand for the "new". Great read.

Not a bad Rails book

I found this book to be a pretty good overview of the Rails framework. It covers the basics, and is clearly written. I didn't find it to be a "bible" of RoR, in that my expectations of such a book would be a very in depth collection of information. This is why I rate it a 4/5.

That being said, it's a good book, and worth owning if you are new to RoR.

As someone with no previous experience with Ruby on Rails, I found this is very good introduction to this environment. The how-to format was very good at producing results quickly.
