An action packed wrap up to this trilogy!
By thecovercontessa
I want to thank HarperTeen for supplying me with an early copy of this book to read and give an honest review. Receiving this book for free has in no way altered my opinion or review.

If you haven't read the first or second book in this series, I suggest you stop here. I cannot say there won't be spoilers for those book. Plus, you really can't read and understand this one without the background of the first and second books!

This book picks up where Tremor left off. Faith and Dylan have fought off Clara and Wade and are now trying to figure out a plan to defeat them and shut down Hotspur Chance from destroying the States.

This book has a bit more romance between Faith and Dylan than the last one. It's not suffused with it, but there are kisses here and there and you really get the sense of how in love these two have grown.

It also has more death. Death of characters you've grown to adore and love. And we meet a few new characters along the way, as well. Ones who become important to the entire movement Dylan and Faith have created.

I can't get into the plot too much without spoiling things, but let's just say Dylan and Faith fight tooth and nail along with Hawk and Clooger to stop Hostpur from killing millions of innocent people. It's not done without injury to any of them, or separation between them.

Carman does a nice job of keeping this book filled with just as much action as the last. Dylan and Faith really do become super heroes set on making things right. I love their faith in not only each other, but those they have come to trust. His scene are intense. Filled with enough juice to really keep you turning the pages and wanting more.

In the end, I was completely satisfied with how he chose to wrap things up. Carman ups the stakes in this book, taking Faith and Dylan on a wild hunt to right those that have been wronged and to ensure society has it's best chance at survival. HIs characters are strong and well thought out.

Fans of sci-fi and dystopian alike will enjoying the thrilling ride Carman has created with the Pulse trilogy. A emotionally charge roller coaster ride of super awesomeness.

Quake is the final installation of the Pulse series. So if you’re looking for a series to read, then you should read the Pulse series! With action-packed moments and good twists of story, this is a series you do not want to miss. Seriously, Patrick surely knows how to keep his readers entertained.

From the moment I picked up Pulse, I was in for a surprise. I was not expecting to enjoy this book, the first book, as much as I did. The book contains a good taste of romance that is well timed and it leaves you wanting more. Not only this but there is a mystery and well, if you like mystery like myself, then this series will keep you turning to pages.

Quake picks right where Tremor ends. You must read the books in order. In Pulse, we come to learn Gretchen is the leader of the drifters and mother of Dylan. In Tremor, we learn her past and discover Dylan’s father identity. To top this, we learn about second-pulses. In Quake, readers will learn more of the four second-pulses, what they are capable of doing. More like what else they are capable. Just when we think we know where the story is heading, Patrick throws us new information and leaves us unbalance. Yet, wraps everything up nicely.

After finishing Quake… Yeah, I’m still in wonder at the way things ended. Patrick surely knows how to create an action-packed plot. Seriously, he's brilliant. Even though its bittersweet to have this series end, I am happy how things ended. I am looking forward to read more of his work.

Lovers of sci-fi should give Pulse series a try!

It was a book.
By DreadMelon
There was almost nothing memorable about this trilogy. It fits the typical, used up plot line that is YA Dystopian currently. Girl has special powers, girl has something negative with parents, girl fights government, girl gets love interest, meaningless characters suffer meaningless deaths, Big Bad Guy kills everyone, someone somehow stops him, and then they live happily ever after (assuming that the 2 teenage couples composed of emotionally distressed people last forever.)

A First Book of Quantum Field Theory, by Amitabha Lahiri, Palash B. Pal

This book introduces QFT for a reader with no prior knowledge of the subject. It is meant to be a textbook for advanced undergraduate or beginning postgraduate students. The book discusses quantization of fields, S-matrix theory, Feynman diagrams, calculation of decay rates and cross sections, renormalization, symmetries and symmetry breaking. Some background material on classical field theory and group theory, needed for the exposition, are also presented in the book. Detailed calculations of weak and electromagnetic processes are included. There are many exercise problems to help the students, instructors and beginning researchers in the field. The second edition improves upon some notations and explanations, and includes answers to selected exercises.

Finally an "easy" book on QFT
By Rehan Dost
I had to specially order this book but it was well worth it.

To start the authors presuppose only the standard undergraduate mathematical background. Readers adept in multi-variable calculus and linear algebra with applications to Special Relativity and introductory quantum mechanics will have no difficulty with the book.

The authors present the IDEAS of QFT and then elaborate adding detail in stages with worked examples.

They first introduce classical field theory and develop both the Langrangian and Hamiltonian concepts culminating in the principle of least action. Variational calculus techniques are employed to develop the standard euler langrange equations. Noether's theorem is introduced which roughly speaking, states that for each symmetry of the Langrangian one has a conserved quantity. For example space translation invariance leads to conservation of linear momentum and time symmetry leads to conservation of energy. Two types of symmetries are distinguished, namely internal and external. Lorentz transformations fall within the later category.

Quantization of the energy mass relation is shown to lead to the Klein-Gordon equation which has issues when intrepreted as a wavefunction equation.

We see how the general solution for the Klein-Gordon equation should be intrepreted as an operator equation ( so called second quantization ). This leads to a meaningful reintrepretation of the solution as a quantum field with spacetime acting as a way to label the operators. That is each spacetime point has an infinite collection of annihilation and creation operators ( 1 for each momentum ). Fock space, ground states and normal ordering issues are dealt with. The commutation relationships are explored.

Complex scalar fields are dealt with next with few changes but new phenomena of antiparticles.

The idea of a propagator is introduced namely the transition probability amplitude of the creation of a particle at a spacetime point and annihilation later. This is done using Green functions and then shown to be the same as the above transition amplitude. The importance of time ordering of operators is introduced.

The dirac equation and solutions and second quantization of this field is discussed as are the propogators. It is shown how the hamiltonian derived from the appropriate langrangian has negative energy issues which can only be dealt with by using anticommutation rules. This in turn implies the pauli exclusion principle. Thus the dirac field is suitable in describing spin 1/2 particles.

Thus far the book has dealt with free fields. Now comes the interesting part..interactions. The S matrix is defined and a perturbation expansion explained. Wick expansion is dealt with and we see how the terms in the wick expansion can be pictorially understood.. a natural segueway to Fenyman diagrams. Fenyman rules are introduced. We thus see how the S matrix elements which allow the calculation of transition probabilites between "input" and "output" states can be broken down using wick expansion to individual processes which can be drawn as Fenyman diagrams which can then be used to calculate the probability amplitudes using fenyman rules. This sounds complex but EACH STEP is explained with plenty of examples.

The authors then deal with quantizing the EM field and show how we run into problems unless...new idea here....we introduce gauge fixing. By now you should know what is coming. The field operators are derived as are the propogators and fenyman diagrams for the photon.

We are now ready for QED ( quantum electrodynamics ). It is shown how the langrangian describing the dirac field has a global symmetry. However, as every physics student knows this is not desired in SR which implies local symmetry ( finite speed of light ). Thus trying to make this langrangian have a local symmetry necessitates the introduction of another field....the EM field! This is another idea....called....gauging the global symmetry. Now the QED is applied to electron-positron and compton scattering.

Next the CPT discrete symmetries are dealt with as is renormalization.

The authors then introduce symmetry breaking. That is although the Langrangian may possess the symmetry the ground state may not. They show how symmetry breaking introduces massless particles called goldstone bosons in the case of global symmetries.. The requisite group theory is nicely introduced here. Local symmetries which undergo symmetry breaking are introduced and it is shown how the massless field disappears and how the gauge field terms acquire mass! This is the so called Higgs mechanism and has implications for electroweak theory.

The authors then tackle non-abelian symmetries ( Yang-Mills theories ) just touching on the need for "ghost" fields ( Fadeev Popov method) and Quantum chromodynamics. Briefly the Langrangian for the quarks is "gauged" which produces 8 gauge fields or gluons. There really is no detail here but the reader is inticed to explore more advanced texts.

Finally, electroweak theory is briefly outlined...again the reader is prepared for more advanced texts.

The mathematically mature student with a background in SR and non-relativistic QM will have no problem completing this book in a few months or less.

I would read this book before starting Peskin and Schroeder.

Terrific introduction to Quantum Field Theory
By Yang Li
This is the textbook when I was learning QFT. I think this is one of the best books for introducing Quantum Field Theory at a postgraduate level. Starting with the reaon why people need QFT, the idea of second quantizaiton is introduced. Both boson and fermion fields are given in a very clear way, followed by Feynman diagrams, Wick's theorem etc. Decay rates and cross sections are calculated with many worked examples. Finally, the ideas of renormalization, symmetry and symmetry breaking, non-Abelian gauge field are included in its second part. The whole book is written in an easy-to-understand language. The important concepts are emphasized with examples. I feels very comfortable when reading this book. This book is not so deep, so if you want to know more about QFT, you need to read other books.

This book is reminiscent of Mandl Shaw, another popular "easy" QFT book, but this one's better overall. Mandle Shaw starts out by throwing the Fourier decomposition of the field at you straight away instead of easing you into the subject, following the seeming physics authoring trend of containing an introduction that's only comprehensible once you've finished the book. (Do physics authors know what conclusions are for?) The Lahiri Pal introduction is very readable though, and technicality ramps up in a reasonable way. Also, the writing style of this book is very concise and entertaining. Some chapters read almost like mysteries, starting with puzzles that await solving--much better that the usual approach of meandering without any strategy the reader is aware of. I really like certain sections of Mandl Shaw, such as the explanation of QED Feynman diagrams in Ch. 7, but all in all Lahiri Pal is a much smoother intro to QFT, not because it's easier or dumbed down, but because it's just plain better. My favorite part is the awesome calculation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron in 11.3. Hopefully this excellent book's popularity will increase!

Scoundrels, thieves and rebels inhabit the rookeries--where the women are fierce and the men are dangerous. Are you willing to take the risk?
ONCE, SHE WAS BEAUTIFUL...
Abigail Vautille dreamed of escaping the Whitechapel rookery and starting a new life, until one tragic night left her scarred and penniless. ONCE, HE WAS CHARMING...Inspector Michael Strickland of the Metropolitan Police has always had a way with women. Success comes easily to him, and he glides through life on his good looks and family name. But Abigail lights a passion within him he never knew existed. He sees the beauty within her, not the beast she believes herself to be.
TOGETHER, THEIR LOVE IS BEYOND A FAIRY TALE.After a dangerous figure from Abigail's past resurfaces vowing vengeance, things take a sinister turn. But Michael will stop at nothing to keep the woman he loves safe. When the stakes are high and the scars are more than skin deep, passion might be the key to a happily ever after.--------Beauty and the Rake is a dark, gritty, and sexy full-length romantic suspense set in pre-Victorian working class London. While it is book three in the Rookery Rogues series, it can be read as a stand-alone historical romance.

Review
"This had so much going for it. Just barely pre-Victorian/tail end of the Georgian era!  Non-nobles!  Slums!  Delightful references to the Disney animated B&B!  Other references to La Belle et La Bete!  Turning other references on their heads!  An exploration of where the line between "victim" and "survivor" is!" - Smart B*tches, Trashy Books, A Review
"A bittersweet historical love story that tells a story of love, loss, and redemption...A nice change from the usual trend of historical romances playing out among the aristocrats. Dynamic characters and a well-plotted storyline shows Monroe's obvious attention to detail and allows readers an intimate view of the attitudes towards the lower class and the struggles that they endured day-to-day to survive." -Smexy Books, Reviewer's Top 2015 Books
"A tender and sensual romance...an engaging and satisfying read, and one I'd certainly recommend." -All About Romance
"An exciting tale of intrigue and love." -Tracey Devlyn, USA Today Bestselling Author
"A gritty, realistic, and superbly written love story. Erica Monroe demonstrates yet again her superb writing abilities, her profound understanding of human nature, and gives us a wonderful historical romance that is wonderfully different from anything out there!" -Fresh Fiction
"Fast paced tale with a deliciously wicked blend of danger, suspense and romance. Well written with Ms. Monroe's aplomb for history and her unique writing style." -My Book Addiction
"The angst of her hero and heroine as two wounded individuals, both inside and out, was palpable throughout the author's well written work." -Jenerated Reviews
"I was fully involved in this novel emotionally. It is so rare that we are given a window into another part of the Victorian-Regency-Georgian London that does not involve Dukes and Duchesses, and ballrooms...This novel was gritty, realistic and paints a picture that was engaging and a joy to read." -The Keeper Bookshelf
"Beauty and the Rake is a well-written and developed romance between a pair of engaging protagonists. I will certainly be keeping an eye out for whatever Ms Monroe writes next." -Romantic Historical Reviews
"I liked how the tension was put into the story through the twists and turns of wondering when Abigail's nemesis would finally make his move. From beginning to end this story had me enthralled and I was delighted with the final result and Michael and especially Abigail getting their happy ending." -Straight Shootin' Book Reviews

From the Inside Flap
Dear Reader,
I have always loved the fairy tale of Beauty and the Beast. It was my favorite Disney movie as a child, and as soon as I was old enough to read, I devoured not only the classical versions but as many iterations as I could find. Over the years, the tale of Beauty and her Beast has stuck with me, for its depiction of the power of love to transform not only our societal expectations but our personal beliefs. When Beauty first meets her Beast, she's armed with stories of what a cruel, murderous villain he is. But Beauty's kindness strikes something in the Beast, and soon they are both on this self-discovery quest. They bring out the best in each other.I've known that I was going to write stories for both Abigail and Michael since they appeared on the page in Secrets in Scarlet. Though neither shared scenes, their similar desire for acceptance, and their need to move beyond their pasts appealed to me. I wanted to do a different take on Beauty and the Beast, and after Abigail's scarring, I had my Beast. But what about my Beauty? While Michael Strickland is a handsome man, he's still got a lot of changing and growing up to do. So you could say in this sense...they are both Beauty, and they are both Beast. It is in their love for each other that they become changed creatures.I hope you enjoy my reverse Beauty and the Beast.

Just a differing opinion.
By OLT
There is most likely something wrong with me because I did not like this even a little and the other reviewers loved it. Something about this just doesn't work for me and on the off chance that there's somebody else like me out there in Romance Reading World, I'm sticking my head out and writing this review.

This is book 3 of Monroe's Rookery series. It's admirable that she has chosen London's poor areas and inhabitants for her stories. No fancy dress balls, dukes or earls and diamonds of the first water. Nope. We have working gals and guys, some of them ever so slightly on the shady side of life, because that's what you have to do to survive.

That's why this third story disappoints. I need realism if we're going to have stories about the lower classes and the nitty gritty of life. I don't want a policeman, son of a policeman, who lives in a large, well-decorated home with an incredible library and three employees (housekeeper, cook, and butler/footman/valet). He lives well and has money and comes from a (I believe) upper-class family. That family money thing confuses because why did his father work as a policeman if so? And the book has us sometimes believing that hero Michael lives comfortably because of family money, yet at other times the implication is that he needs to work for his money, with gambling on the side to supplement. Color me confused.

And then there's the heroine. Poor as a church mouse, working from dawn to dusk weaving textiles in a factory, yet she has all the time in the world to read books and educate herself. She's so well read and well spoken that she puts upper-class young ladies to shame. (Granted, she had to steal the books and form a "lending library" of sorts with other book thieves in the neighborhood.)

The romance doesn't work for me either. The H is, IMO, a bit of an arse. When gambling with the h's father puts the family in his debt, he takes advantage of the opportunity for the h to pay off the debt by staying with him for two weeks in his bed. Well, ick on him even if we're supposed to see that he is a tortured soul and will be redeemed by our beauty's love. And, speaking of our beauty, I wanted her to have more spine. She seems to melt whenever the H says suggestive things to her or looks at her speakingly. Yet I felt no warmth and romance in the relationship of these two. No fuzzies for me here.

So the book disappointed me. After book 2, I was looking forward to this one, feeling terrible about what had happened to this young woman at the end of the previous story. Unfortunately, book 3 doesn't make use of the possibilities this set-up provides.

Review: Beauty and the Rake by Erica Monroe
By Tori @SmexyBooks
Favorite Quote: “This must be what heaven smelled like: musty books and leather furniture.“

A poor weaver from the ghetto of Whitechapel, Abigail Vautille may not have had much, but she had her looks and her job until a madman takes it all away from her. With no means of employment and a gambling addict for a father, Abigail is faced with the prospect of prostitution or starving. When her father’s latest debts are more than she can pay, she offers herself to the man who holds her father’s markers, promising him two weeks and her virtue if he excuses the debt.

Inspector Michael Strickland of the Metropolitan Police has used his family’s good name, connections, and money to afford himself the finer things in life. Success and women have always come easy to him and he has never questioned his means until he sees Abigail again. When he rescued her from near death, he visited her everyday at the hospital, willing his strength into her. He never forgot about her and while he dreamed of her coming to his bed, it was never like this.

The more time they spend together, the more Michael realises that two weeks will never be enough time to uncover all the secrets of Abigail. But Abigail’s scars run deep and when she discovers a secret Michael has been keeping from her, she will need to decide if love is enough to forgive the past in order to secure her future.

I love retellings of classic fairy tales; Beauty and the Beast being a particular favorite of mine. Erica Monroe takes this classic and reworks it, adding a pinch of this and a shake of that to create a unique and bittersweet love story that offers up a un. Set in the 1800’s, Beauty and the Rake focuses on London’s lower and middle class. A nice change from the usual trend of historical romances playing out among the aristocrats where the idea of going hungry or cold is unfathomable. The mechanics of the story work well with the characters. Monroe’s obvious attention to detail allowing us an intimate view of the attitudes towards the lower class and the struggles that they endured day to day to survive.

Abigail Vautille and Michael Strickland were first introduced in book two-Secrets In Scarlet. Though I didn’t read the first two books of the series, I had absolutely no confusion while reading this one. Monroe doesn’t recap the series but she does give the reader just enough of the past to let us know and understand the demons that push Abigail and the part Michael played in the events that led up to Abigail’s torture.

I found myself instantly smitten by the hero and heroine. Michael is a sexy alpha with a seemingly laissez-faire attitude that confuses, confounds, and delights as we slowly piece together the real man behind the mask. His childhood plays a large role in his present behavior yet for all his posturing, there is a strong thread of respect, decency, and honor that exists within in him. It will just take the right person to bring it out.

“It’s easier for you this way, isn’t it? If I pretend to play the game.”

Abigail tugs at our heartstrings as we can feel the despair that always surrounds her. Forced into the role of parent and provider to her sister and father at a young age then tragically disfigured. The anger, shame, and disgust she feels by having to prostitute herself out to yet save her father again is at cross purposes with her strength and pride. She has survived worse and will survive this. Michael and Abigail’s romance begins slowly and antagonistically; our hero and heroine fighting against the chemistry and their own demons from first meeting. We are privy to their every thought which makes for interesting insight into their lives.

“She was immaterial. Her life meant nothing. Her virtue meant nothing.”

I loved watching Abigail grow, not only in her sexuality but as a person. With Michael at her side, she is able to slowly let go of the anger and shame that consumes her. Michael has kept his feelings buried for so long and Abigail’s own emotional breakthrough helps to break down his walls. Watching him fall in love with Abigail is emotionally gratifying. His constant struggle between what he wants and what he feels he should do is a never ending battle that extends through much of the story. The physical scenes are very passionate and gratifying with bits of humor and naughtiness involved as Michael goes from teaching Abigail how to pleasure him to doing all he can to bring her pleasure.

‘I’m not a perfect man but around you, I become something more. “

A dynamic cast of secondary characters are all well developed and add to the familiarity and continuance of the main storyline. Their merging stays constant through the story and Ms. Laurens does well in slowly integrating them into the story and allowing their scenes to help our protagonists. I enjoyed finding the small scenes and figures that Monroe culls from the fairy tale for her story. The small suspense storyline that carried over from book two is low key as we follow the hints and clues to their discover their ultimate goals. The ending comes at you fast and wraps up the storyline and subsequent sub plots in a clear and concise manner that answers all our questions and concerns. There is even a sweet epilogue (and you all know how much I love epilogues) that leave us secure in Michael and Abigail’s future.

I look forward to reading more of Ms. Monroe’s books in the future.

Raw and revealing!
By eyes.2c
What do you do when all you've left to bargain with is your body? When that is all that stands between your father and prison and your younger sister and the streets? Abigail Vautille's father is an inveterate gambler who has gambled away any savings she has and now has lost money he doesn't have in a seedy gambling den. Michael Strickland holds his gambling chits and there is only one way Abigail can see to pay him.
Inspector Michael Strickland of the Metropolitan Police and Abigail Vautille both appeared in Secrets in Scarlet. Abigail was tortured by the dangerous rookery Lark's Gang enforcer, Frank Clowes and left with a badly scarred hand. So bad that she wears a glove day and night to hide her disfigurement.
Abigail determines that her only way forward is as Michael's courtesan for two weeks. An agreement is entered into.
Michael sees the attractive woman he knew from before and reasons that as a denizen of the Rookeries her virtue is gone. He has always admired her and felt guilty about her fate. Now fate has thrown Abigail across his pathway and he will take that advantage.
In her afterward Munroe discusses, amongst other matters, her liking of the Disney version of Beauty and the Beast, and that love is about acceptance. 'Both Belle and Beast are affected by their new found relationship. Beast is no longer trapped in his past pain, and Beauty has found someone who thinks she is incredible just the way she is.'
She postulates that Beauty and Beast co-exist within us--a dichotomy where here, Michael and Abigail harbour both. Munroe continues 'It is our flaws that make us beautiful, as much as our strengths.'
No one ever said that the Rookery series is kind and gentle. The situations are raw and untrammelled and fitting the place in which they are born. Yet out of the darkness does flow love and trust.
A novel of depth and compassion!

The Ancient Roman City (Ancient Society and History), by John E. Stambaugh

To walk through Rome today is to find the past made present at nearly every corner. For John Stambaugh, this continuity of fabric, form, and function affords an extraordinary view of the ancient city, the experience of its inhabitants, and the Roman way of life. Exploring ancient Rome as both a physical and social environment, he has written the first extended survey of its development in English - and a vivid "guidebook into the living past of one of the most emphatically urban cities the world has ever known."

Both comprehensive and accessible
By Klio S.
When I first read this book some years ago, as a classics major and student of ancient domestic architecture, I found it easy to read and digest. The caveat for this review is that it has been a few years since I last referenced the book--although I always make certain it's handy on my library shelf. It walks the line between detailed scholarship and accessibility, which led me at first to wonder how it could be both a pleasant read and so informative. It helps that this is a topic of special interest for me, but I remember it so fondly that I still think of it as a model for writing on the topic. I recommend it as an introduction or overview, and direct readers to the footnotes and sources for further reading and study.

Good Information Trapped in an Editor's Nightmare
By Hippolytos
The bottom line is that Stambaugh offers up a lot of information in a reasonably small volume, making it interesting and accessible. The only fault, besides an overtly unapologetic Romanocentric view, is that his prose style is somewhat redundant and pejorative. With each chapter he lays out the information he plans to present, and then drifts back and forth between examples. At the end of each chapter he presents a succint and very readable summary of his findings. That is, essentially all of the information you need is available in approximately one-tenth of the text. Nevertheless, this is a fascinating account of the architecture and engineering of the ancient city of Rome; most interesting are his accounts of the representation of the city in the Hellenistic Era. Recommended.

A rich overview
By P. Troutman
This overview of ancient Rome -- only the last forty-some pages explore other cities -- attempts to bring the metropolis to life in every way it can, from architecture to government to prostitution to religion to food to holidays, and attempts to engage as many senses as possible in the process. (I can't think of any other book on Antiquity that seems so interested in smells.)

On the whole, the book is quite accessible. The writing style is easy, given the alien quality of such a remote time. (I thought I had the impression because I have been reading such difficult materials, like Herodotus and a primer on congressional procedures, but the other reviews say the same thing.) Likewise, the book doesn't presume too much familiarity with the Roman Empire, though a passing knowledge of the religion and emperors would help. The only place where I found it hard to visualize what was being described was a section that attempted to link variations in architecture styles to specific emperor's personalities. There, the onslaught of names of specific buildings that I didn't know limited the effectiveness of the arguments -- but also made me want to visit the city.

I'm not an expert on Rome, so I can't answer the big question about this book. This work is a synthesis of research on the city. If we figure that it took several years to find a publisher and get published, at least several years to write and then several more years for the articles and books upon which it is based to get written, then this work represents cutting edge 1970s archaeology. In some fields, a lot has happened over the last 35 years. In others, surprisingly little. (To take modern urban studies as an example, the Reagan-Bush era saw a dazzling array of theories and books. Since then, nothing particularly earth-shaking has happened.) In other words, I don't know how dated this book is.

But there is one nice feature about the book being older. The many maps of city layouts and sketches of buildings have an authentic feel: you know that the person drawing them used fundamentally the same approach as whoever drew the original designs for the buildings around the Forum and wasn't simply using a scanner and a mouse.

If one wanted to lodge a serious complaint about this book, it is that it only covers the rise of Roman cities. This is only half of the story. The decline of Rome is at least as interesting as its growth.

If you're interested in this topic, a better book (albeit less rich in its descriptions) is Metropolis and Hinterland: The City of Rome and the Italian Economy, 200 BC-AD 200. I learned a great deal, not just about Rome, but about how and why people create cities in the first place.

A commentary on the inter-connectedness of all nature.
By A Customer
While exploring the uncharted islands of the Javanese Atoll, Dr. Watson's boat is unexpectedly caught in a typhoon of incredible ferocity. When the storm abated, Dr.Watson and his crew discovered they had been carried nearly four hundred miles off their original course. With their boat badly damaged they headed for the first land they saw and discovered not only a refuge from the sea, but an island whose inhabitants possess an exceptional connection to the environment that surrounds them.
Here were a people whose primary language is dance, who interpret sound as color, and who displayed a profound understanding of the power within everything that surrounded them; whether it be rock or tree, wind or sea. This is a journal of a personal odessey that changed the life of the author and will influence the life of everyone who reads it. The power of this book is not in its words but in the understandings that will resonate within the reader as the story of this incredible experience unfolds.

An all-time classic!
By Cynthia Sue Larson
Biologist Lyall Watson travels to Indonesia in search of magic... and finds a 'dancing island' and a girl who comes of age to become a shaman and healer. For those who simply enjoy a good story, this is an excellent book. For those who realize that the magic described in this book is real, it's even better. Watson is a first-rate story-teller, and I would give this book ten stars if such a thing were possible!

I enjoyed it a lot
By I. C. Onur
I think Mr. Watson did an interesting twist by candy wrapping many ideas and philosophies under the guise of a memoir. I enjoyed it a lot. At times I felt like certain aspects did not fit as tight as others with the narrative but it didn't deter me from enjoying his work. A very good read.
