A Highly Useful Resource!!
By Amazon Customer
As a couples therapist, I have long suggested Stan Tatkin’s books to my clients as an significant part of therapy and their ongoing journey as a couple. Now Stan has presented the perfect companion for those clients who have not yet paired up, are in the beginning stages of pairing up, or even those who are in relationship but want to deepen their understanding of attraction, commitment and longterm success in relationship. In this new book, Stan offers the “science” of attachment, neurobiology, arousal systems along with practical skill based exercises to guide the reader in the picking, vetting, dating and committing process. Stan’s natural ability to relate his brilliance and interpersonal self is felt on every page of this book! I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the journey of dating.

Dr. Tatkin's Books Helped Us Create the Best Relationship!
By Marie Benard
I love all of Dr. Stan Tatkin's work and have also read Wired for Love and listened to his entire audio program, Your Brain on Love. I highly, highly recommend his books and have interviewed him on my radio show and YouTube channel 4 times now, which is probably more than anyone else in the 8 years the show has been on the air. Wired for Dating will give you a basic understanding of attachment types, helpful stories that provide some context, and exercises to give you practice and insight into your reactive patterns in dating and relationships. Dr. Tatkin's work has transformed my relationship and I have finally been able to create a "secure functioning" relationship within a "couple bubble" that gives me and my partner the secure attachment we didn't get as kids. We both feel so grateful to have discovered his material and I wish this stuff was common knowledge. Even if your childhood attachments were great and your relationships have been solid, if you're out in the world of dating, you're going to bump into people who didn't have that experience. It's helpful to know how to relate and communicate with authenticity in a way that isn't likely to trigger them. You'll learn a lot about yourself and the people you're dating.

I wish I had known Stan Tatkin's work a long time ago, and had been able to apply these tools in the early phases of relationships. The most valuable tool is understanding how to have secure functioning relationships even while dating, he even includes a description of a secure functioning break up. Understanding the basics of a secure functioning relationship and having a roadmap to go from healthy dating to healthy commitment is invaluable.

From Publishers Weekly
This impressive piece of scholarship consists of an edited transcript of two 1987 conferencesthe first at Hawk's Cay in Florida, the other in Cambridge, Mass.attended by policymaking participants in the Cuban missile crisis and scholars noted for their work on the subject. The book also includes follow-up interviews as well as searching analysis and commentary by Blight and Welch. Among the conferees were Dean Rusk, Robert McNamara, Maxwell Taylor, McGeorge Bundy and George Ball. Among the scholars: Thomas Schelling and Richard Neustadt. Three Soviets took part in the second conference: a former speechwriter for Nikita Khrushchev, Anastas Mikoyan's former personal secretary, and a senior member of the Central Committee. In these extraordinarily candid discussions, the participants trace the development and resolution of the crisis, shedding considerable light on a complex affair. The book is important reading both for students of the 1962 Cuban crisis and as a model of grand-scale crisis resolution. A third conference is to be held, in which high-ranking Cubans are expected to participate. Blight is executive director of Harvard's Center for Science and International Affairs, where Welch is a research fellow.

Critical oral history of the Cuban Missile Crisis
By Caleb Hanson
What the authors call "critical oral history": write-ups and analyses of a number of conversations about the crisis of October 1962, 25 years later. The first, in Florida, March 1987, between some surviving members of Kennedy's ExComm and scholars of the subject; the second, a series of interviews in May 1987 with two hawks and two doves from the ExComm; the third (and most interesting), in Cambridge, October 1987, between three former ExComms and three Soviet officials who were close to things in '62; and, in the Afterword, no transcript but an analysis of a meeting in January 1989 in Moscow, with the six principals from Cambridge, more Soviets (including Gromyko and Dobrynin!), and a handful of Cubans!

Not for beginners: assumes some knowledge of the events (at least as much as from watching the tv drama "Missiles of October"). There are a few surprises that come up here and there, but most of the fun is in watching people with very different perspectives on the crisis try to put the pieces together 25 years after the fact, and try to guess what was going on inside the heads of JFK, RFK, and Khruschev. Now, 20 *more* years after the event, it doesn't feel very relevant anymore, and it's not a straightforward narrative of events by any means; but for what it is, it's very interesting reading once. Mostly for scholars of the crisis; I doubt it would be much fun for the lay reader.

The Voyeur's Motel, by Gay Talese

On January 7, 1980, in the run-up to the publication of his landmark bestseller Thy Neighbor’s Wife, Gay Talese received an anonymous letter from a man in Colorado. “Since learning of your long awaited study of coast-to-coast sex in America,” the letter began, “I feel I have important information that I could contribute to its contents or to contents of a future book.” The man went on to tell Talese an astonishing secret, that he had bought a motel to satisfy his voyeuristic desires. He had built an attic “observation platform,” fitted with vents, through which he could peer down on his unwitting guests.

Unsure what to make of this confession, Talese traveled to Colorado where he met the man—Gerald Foos—verified his story in person, and read some of his extensive journals, a secret record of America’s changing social and sexual mores. But because Foos insisted on remaining anonymous, Talese filed his reporting away, assuming the story would remain untold. Now, after thirty-five years, he’s ready to go public and Talese can finally tell his story. The Voyeur’s Motel is an extraordinary work of narrative journalism, and one of the most talked about books of the year.

Review
Praise for The Voyeur’s Motel:

“This book flipped nearly all of my switches as a reader. It’s a strange, melancholy, morally complex, grainy, often appalling and sometimes bleakly funny book, one that casts a spell not dissimilar to that cast by Janet Malcolm’s The Journalist and the Murderer . . . Gripping . . . [Talese] lays out what he knows and does not know in sentences that are as crisp as good Windsor knots. He expresses his qualms, but trusts the reader to come to his or her own conclusions . . . An intense book.”—Dwight Garner, New York Times

“Informative and intriguing . . . [I] was enlightened and entertained by The Voyeur’s Motel.”—Washington Post

“Talese writes with his usual elegance.”—New York Times Book Review

“A peculiar tale too good not to tell.”—David L. Ulin, Los Angeles Times

“Whether Gerald Foos is telling the complete truth is almost beside the point. The Voyeur is so fascinating a character—insightful, observant and amoral—that the reader becomes caught up in his story.”—Providence Journal

“Pioneering reporter Gay Talese tells the ultimate surveillance story in The Voyeur’s Motel . . . Talese—a master of elegant, understated prose—uses an objective reportorial style to tell the voyeur’s story, and it’s the right approach for a narrative that requires no extra spice . . . An unforgettable book.”—BookPage

“Foos [is revealed] as a singularly pervy, grandiose, and strangely eloquent weirdo who would be irresistible to any writer, let alone one as talented, patient, and thoughtful as Talese . . . Those seeking a uniquely discomfiting journey couldn’t find a better pair of reprobates with whom to cast their lot.”—Booklist

“Undoubtedly creepy and unnerving but also an entirely compelling slice of seamy American life.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“[A] revealing case study . . . There’s a prurient charge to these vignettes, but Foos’s pretense of sexological research isn’t entirely misplaced; his accounts are well-observed, with telling details . . . and insights into the psychology behind the physicality . . . The dirty laundry here has some interesting stains.”—Publishers Weekly

“[A] truly shocking story . . . Not your typical beach book, perhaps, but you may want to read this compulsive page-turner—which raises all sorts of fascinating journalistic, moral and legal issues—under cover of an umbrella.”—Barnes & Noble Review

“A provocative and compelling story.”—Midwest Book Review

“An unsettling read . . . Foos’s notes offer a long-term glimpse into the sex lives of Americans.”—Maclean’s (Canada)

“A weird, fascinating and thoroughly uncomfortable story built from layers of complicity . . . Creepily fascinating reading.”—Financial Times (UK)

“[An] eye-popping book . . . Completely riveting from start to finish . . . Darkly comical . . . It is by turns fascinating and illuminating, very creepy and very funny, and will live in my memory long after many more doggedly accurate works have vanished into thin air.”—Mail on Sunday (UK)

“A riveting page-turner . . . Short and brisk, it tells a compellingly sordid story, and Foos is one fascinating dude . . . The book is compulsively readable.”—Winnipeg Free Press

About the Author
Gay Talese was born in Ocean City, New Jersey, in 1932, to Italian immigrant parents. He attended the University of Alabama, and after graduating was hired as a copyboy at the New York Times.

After a brief stint in the army, Talese returned to the New York Times in 1956. Since then he has written for numerous publications, including Esquire, the New Yorker, Newsweek, and Harper’s Magazine. It was these articles that led Tom Wolfe to credit Gay Talese with the creation of an inventive form of nonfiction writing called “The New Journalism.”

Talese’s bestselling books have dealt with the history and influence of the New York Times (The Kingdom and the Power); the inside story of a Mafia family (Honor Thy Father); his father’s immigration to America from Italy in the years preceding World War II (Unto the Sons); and the changing moral values of America in the period between World War II and the AIDS epidemic (Thy Neighbor’s Wife).

Gay Talese lives with his wife, Nan, in New York City.

Foos’ journal, no matter how murkily achieved, is a sociological sexual study of changing mores amongst the middle class.
By Stacy Helton
Gay Talese, author of two of my favorite books, THY NEIGHBOR’S WIFE and HONOR THY FATHER, has polished off a tawdry short piece of sexual sociology with THE VOYEUR’S MOTEL. Talese’s piece is fifty years in the making, but was first published this spring in THE NEW YORKER. In 1966 Gerald Foos, a businessman in Aurora, Colorado, opened the Manor House Motel in which he installed vents above six rooms so he could observe the actions of his guests. With his wife’s compliance, Foos journaled the sexual proclivities of guests for almost forty years. Talese enters the picture in 1980, when Foos sends him a letter detailing his adventures and requesting a meeting. Talese flies to Colorado and meets with Foos, even accompanying him to his viewing platform and watching a young couple fornicate. Talese realizes he can’t publish the man’s story because Foos does not want to be identified, due to legal issues, etc. Over the next thirty years Foos shares his detailed journals with Talese via the mail, which Talese reproduces chunks of throughout the slim book. The entries are titillating and revealing as the times change in regards to interracial sex, homosexual relations and group play. The more interesting moments are the ones where guests simply relate as people, brushing their teeth, discussing money, going to the bathroom and eating fast food. The “voyeur,” as Foos refers to himself sees rape, incest, physical abuse, drug use and even in one instance a murder. Talese adds little to the journals of Foos, simply some transitional exposition. Upon the release of THE NEW YORKER article Talese had his journalistic ethics called into question, but in my opinion, Talese is now outside the canon, and as one of the few gonzo journalist left, with Tom Wolfe, their views and opinions are often considered “old-fashioned” and “out of date.” That being said, Foos’ journal, no matter how murkily achieved, is a sociological sexual study of changing mores amongst the middle class.

enough to ruin some damn fine fantasies. In short
By BBH
Gay Talese doesn't have a cold, but he is badly slipping. This is a book that never should have been written by a major author, let alone published by a major publishing house. It is well beneath Talese's previous works of narrative nonfiction. It is a story that held up at magazine length, but not at book length. It is a lazy use of the author's talents. He gives over at least one-third of the book (maybe more) to the ramblings from the journal of his voyeur subject, who is no Gay Talese when it comes to writing. After a few pages, enough is enough. Also, the research raised some serious questions. For starters, Talese admits that property records show the man didn't buy the motel until three years AFTER he said he started looking through ceiling peepholes. Talese passes over that as if it doesn't matter. It DOES matter. Also, Talese could not nail down that the murder the voyeur claimed to have witnessed in one room even happened! None of the police agencies had a homicide case for that date, open or closed. Hello! Aren't these some red flags waving that should have made Talese question the validity of the voyeur's story? Finally, this guy admits he wants publicity to help sell his multi-million sports card collection. That's called motive; motive to deceive. Still, Talese plowed on, telling this guy's questionable story that even if it was all true got very uninteresting; enough to ruin some damn fine fantasies. In short, this is the story about a Voyeur Masturbator told by a once huge talent who has sadly become a Literary Masturbator.

Here's looking at you, kid.
By Thomas R. Moorer
This a very interesting book. For those of us growing up in the 50s, a decade Mary Roach ("Bonk") claims was the most sexually repressed decade of the 20th century, it was fascinating to hear about the terrible effects of ignorance and religion on people's sexual enjoyment. The main quibble about the story is that there is some doubt as to its complete veracity. This has caused much controversity, but if you accept the care Talese takes to tell the story and consider the excruciating detail of the voyeur, it is hard to discount the whole thing. Well written journalism about a kinky topic.

The best book I have found for pure Inventory Mgt:
By A Customer
For my line of work, which is strictly in support of inventory management, in a large organization, this book is the best and most comprehensive reference I have found for inventory management. Other references, such as Chopra's or Shapiro's, offer an excellent survey in the broader topic of supply chain management but do not approach the depth of this text in straight inventory management. For the person working in a large organization, in which supply chain management is broken up across large numbers of people and departments, and for whom inventory management is the main focus, then this is the book for such an individual.
The particular strength of this book lies in chapters 5 - 10 in which a very comprehensive analysis is placed on the topics of reorder quantity (Eoq) and the large array of optimization and inventory control techniques in the realm of re-order point, order-up-to logic etc. This text covers classic Eoq analysis, along with the alternative heuristic methods for items displaying an uneven rate of demand. The approach to setting re-order point rules for slow-selling, as opposed to fast-moving items, receives ample coverage. No other book I have seen covers the issue of slow-moving items as well, which is significant since in industry many items are slow movers.
The authors cover the concepts of "exchange curves" and how one can link inventory control objectives at the item level to an aggregate level. This is a critical concept for the practitioner attempting to reconcile item-level inventory control to aggregate inventory and financial planning objectives.
The forecasting section itself offers substantial treatment of the topic though additional depth, such as with an addtional chapter, would improve this book. Perhaps forecasting will receive greater treatment in a future edition.
Also of value is the overall approach to the topic of inventory control, starting with forecasting, then re-order quantity, and then re-order point rules. Also, there are valuable insights to help the practitioner "draw the line" between a fast-moving item and a slow-moving item and specific direction on the inventory control policies to pursue with both classes of inventory. Relatedly, there is excellent discussion on the rules one can apply to approach inventory management with eiter the normal distribution of demand versus when other distributions of demand may apply for slow-moving items. Books such a Chopra's do not give this critical topic the same level of attention.
Mathematical topics and formulas are presented in a manner which should be accessible and substantial for individuals with a wide degree of quantitative backgrounds. The topics are presented with a good degree of detail, rigorous yet still in well-defined sections. The book's construction supports in-depth study in addition to quick reference. References and citations of other work abound for those who wish to explore a topic further.
The Chopra or Shapiro or Simch-Levi or Factory Physics texts cover the topic of variability pooling, two tier systems, and the "bullwhip effect" more successfully than this book.
I have not used the second section of this book which deals with production planning so I will not speak to the quality of its content in these areas.
If I had to choose one text for an inventory management text it would be this one. Though given a choice I have also supplemented it with addtional texts such as Chopra's, Shapiro's and the "Factory Physics" book.

Great explaination but Need more quantitative analysis
By A Customer
This book is comprehensive and very good for introduction to Inventory mgt and production planning but need more quantitative analysis, for instance, math model or algorithm to solve the problems. If you want the real inventory modeling, please choose Johnson and Montgomery book(ISBN 0471446181). Otherwise, this book is great.

Best book on inventory management
By Ulf Hamster
Without any doubt, Silver/Pike/Peterson is the best and most comprehensive book on inventory management. If you are searching for simplistic "management consultant concepts" then buy something else. If you want to learn how realize all these basic concepts take this book. Seriously, what are people exspecting: "too technical" ? Stupid. If you do not have any clue about basic math, why do you wanna go into logistics?

If I should teach somebody on logistics I would gave him or her one of the (thousands) books on simplistic powerpoint-like SCM concepts (if you want read Silver/Pike/Peterson you have to know these concepts beforehand). And when the question arises how to put this into practice, I would give this person the Silver/Pike/Peterson book. In the end, standard concepts are not enough. You need math. And Silver/Pike/Peterson only gives you a brief introduction about the basic math. Thus, alltogether the result will answer the question: how to run operations at the bottom line of the industry. Of course for becoming supply chain champion the book will not offer "the perfect master plan" but Silver/Pike/Peterson will give you the basic knowledge to generate such knowledge.

Slavery and Slaving in African History (New Approaches to African History), by Sean Stilwell

This book is a comprehensive history of slavery in Africa from the earliest times to the end of the twentieth century, when slavery in most parts of the continent ceased to exist. It connects the emergence and consolidation of slavery to specific historical forces both internal and external to the African continent. Sean Stilwell pays special attention to the development of settled agriculture, the invention of kinship, "big men" and centralized states, the role of African economic production and exchange, the interaction of local structures of dependence with the external slave trades (transatlantic, trans-Saharan, Indian Ocean), and the impact of colonialism on slavery in the twentieth century. He also provides an introduction to the central debates that have shaped current understanding of slavery in Africa. The book examines different forms of slavery that developed over time in Africa and introduces readers to the lives, work, and struggles of slaves themselves.

Review
"Sean Stilwell presents us with a powerful entry into the rich debate on the nature and history of slavery and slaving in Africa. His book represents both a valuable point of entry for any scholar moving into this field and a superb synthesis of recent research across the continent for those of us trying to keep up. Stilwell also manages to stake out positions in key debates that respond to recent scholarship, like that from Joe Miller, while inviting new avenues of deliberation. This volume thus serves as a monograph, a historiography, and an excellent teaching text all in one book."
Trevor R. Getz, Professor of History, San Francisco State University

"A refreshing reexamination of the place of slavery in the history of Africa, Slavery and Slaving in African History surveys the role of slaves in the economies and societies of Africa throughout history, thereby establishing context for an understanding of the deportation of slaves across the Atlantic, the Sahara, and the Indian Ocean and of the use of slaves in Africa itself."
Paul E. Lovejoy, FRSC Distinguished Research Professor, Canada Research Chair in African Diaspora History, York University

About the Author
Sean Stilwell is Associate Professor of African History at the University of Vermont.

It's my own fault - I assumed there would be more on how slaves were captured, then put on ships going to the Carribbean and the Southern Atlantic states. Instead, this gave a much wider scope, with slaves taken by the Indian Ocean, the Mediterannean, and to the European countries. Maps are sprinkled throughout, which is very helpful, and statistics are even more prevalent, so the reader could see which countries provided slaves, and which countries received them.

Great Britain was about 50 years in the lead to outlaw slavery, while our Southern States depended on slaves for plantations, but of this there was very little written.
