About the Author
Justin McGuirk is a writer and curator, and has worked as the Guardian's design columnist and the editor of Icon magazine. He is also the director of Strelka Press and the design consultant to Domus, and his writing has appeared in the Observer, the Times, Disegno, Art Review, Condé Nast Traveller, Form, the Architects Journal, Architecture d'Aujourd'hui. In 2012 he was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale of Architecture for an exhibition he curated with Urban Think Tank. He is the incoming Chief Curator of the Design Museum in London.

This is a great book about William Mumler. It gives you insight into what he was doing, how he was attacked by the local prosecutor and is influence on the spiritualist movement. Not a quick read, but lots of good photos, and plenty of interesting content.

Photography Aids the Spirit World

Everyone likes a good ghost story, and everyone has a curiosity about ghosts; some are ready to be astonished at accounts of visits from the spirit world, others to be astonished at the credulity of those who believe such accounts. William Mumler gave a good dose of astonishment for both sides. Mumler, who was active in the 1860s, photographed spirits for the benefit of the bereaved, and his photos fit into the Spiritualist thinking of the time. In _The Strange Case of William Mumler, Spirit Photographer_ (University of Minnesota Press), Louis Kaplan, an associate professor of history and theory of photography, has given the history of Mumler's work, and for the most part the history speaks for itself. He reprints Mumler's own account of his experiences with spirit photography, P. T. Barnum's thoughts on the issue, the argument of the counsel attempting to prosecute Mumler for fraud, and best of all the verbatim press reports about Mumler's career and trial. To read the original documents is to come to a close understanding of the largely American, largely 19th- century craze for communicating with the dead.

Kaplan points out that Mumler could not have flourished "without the intellectual and spiritual support and patronage of the religious movement known as Spiritualism." Mumler had worked as an engraver, and took photographs as a hobby. He claimed that he was completely surprised when shadow images showed up on his plates, hovering over the overt subjects of his portraits. He did believe in Spiritualism, and his wife was a medium. He was happy to have his photos stand as scientific evidence that family members who had crossed to the other side were still with us, and Spiritualist journals like _The Banner of Light_ tended to gush about his photographic successes. P. T. Barnum devoted a chapter of his 1866 book _Humbugs of the World_ to spirit photography. Barnum was one of the witnesses called for the prosecution when Mumler was brought before Judge John Dowling in April and May 1869, to see if the charges of fraud (in the form of felony and misdemeanor) ought to be presented to the grand jury. There were also witnesses to testify that the spirit photographs were genuine manifestations of real spirits. Both sides drew upon the Bible's accounts of spirits to show respectively that they indubitably existed but on the other hand that they existed in an unphotographable form. The prosecutor explained, "Man is naturally both credulous and superstitious, and in all ages of the world imposters and cheats have taken advantage of this credulous and superstitious nature to impose upon their fellows less sharp in intellect than themselves." He listed nine methods by which such photographs could be faked, but the actual process used by Mumler was never found; the prosecutor did mention that the more carefully Mumler's processing of the photograph was watched, the less likely it was to have any extra images, or clear ones. The judge's decision hinged on this; though Mumler had boasted of his mediumistic power, during the trial he averred that he never knew and never claimed to know how the spirits were arranging to show up for their portraits. Since no one had actually caught him doctoring the plates, the judge let Mumler go. The headline in the _New York World_ was, "THE TRIUMPH OF THE GHOSTS". The _Herald_ said such a decision was linked to the general breakdown of social order and a rush of society into bedlam.

Kaplan's volume reproduces many of Mumler's photos, including his most famous, the ghostly image of Lincoln over the shoulder of his widow who had come in for just such a photo. For being so full of joy on "the other side", none of these spirits smiles - they all have the same dour expressions as the living subjects of photographs of the period. Some only show up as disembodied hands. Some thrust crosses into the hands of the sitters. One strums a guitar which a real woman holds. Some shower flowers. It is a great shame that there seems to be no explanation of how the "Spirits of Europe, Africa, and America" showed up behind a Master Herrod, for they are something other than spooks of the departed. Every photo looks like some sort of double exposure, and it is hard to understand how people could have fastened so firmly on them as being evidence of spirits rather than evidence of gullibility. It is fun to see the pictures and "judge for yourself", and it is fun to read what Mumler's contemporaries were making of this new religious manifestation. It would be nice to say we are all less likely to be taken in now, but while we don't do Spiritualism the way they did a hundred and fifty years ago, there are still people who think doubly-exposed photos are evidence of departed spirits. Kaplan even tells of a website devoted to contemporary works of this kind, but in the interest of the promotion of sanity, I will refrain from telling you where it is.

This isn't an easy read but it contains so much rare material that it's worth the time to read carefully. The book examines the life, work and controversies surrounding one of the most fascinating characters in the world of the weird. Was Mumler a brilliant shyster (I argue yes) or a very gifted channeler of the dead? Read on and draw your own conclusions.

Good reference for the oil painter

This book will be most helpful for the oil painter. I did mark a few sections on shading, composition and blocking in that translate to other mediums, but I have not yet made the leap to oils, so this is not a very valuable resource for me. The overall advice to paint small and often, to block in shapes before details, etc. is of course sound and essential.

I enjoyed the book overall; however, the lesser star is that I would have preferred a little more detail in each chapter.

An action packed wrap up to this trilogy!

I want to thank HarperTeen for supplying me with an early copy of this book to read and give an honest review. Receiving this book for free has in no way altered my opinion or review.

If you haven't read the first or second book in this series, I suggest you stop here. I cannot say there won't be spoilers for those book. Plus, you really can't read and understand this one without the background of the first and second books!

This book picks up where Tremor left off. Faith and Dylan have fought off Clara and Wade and are now trying to figure out a plan to defeat them and shut down Hotspur Chance from destroying the States.

This book has a bit more romance between Faith and Dylan than the last one. It's not suffused with it, but there are kisses here and there and you really get the sense of how in love these two have grown.

It also has more death. Death of characters you've grown to adore and love. And we meet a few new characters along the way, as well. Ones who become important to the entire movement Dylan and Faith have created.

I can't get into the plot too much without spoiling things, but let's just say Dylan and Faith fight tooth and nail along with Hawk and Clooger to stop Hostpur from killing millions of innocent people. It's not done without injury to any of them, or separation between them.

Carman does a nice job of keeping this book filled with just as much action as the last. Dylan and Faith really do become super heroes set on making things right. I love their faith in not only each other, but those they have come to trust. His scene are intense. Filled with enough juice to really keep you turning the pages and wanting more.

In the end, I was completely satisfied with how he chose to wrap things up. Carman ups the stakes in this book, taking Faith and Dylan on a wild hunt to right those that have been wronged and to ensure society has it's best chance at survival. HIs characters are strong and well thought out.

Fans of sci-fi and dystopian alike will enjoying the thrilling ride Carman has created with the Pulse trilogy. A emotionally charge roller coaster ride of super awesomeness.

Quake is the final installation of the Pulse series. So if you’re looking for a series to read, then you should read the Pulse series! With action-packed moments and good twists of story, this is a series you do not want to miss. Seriously, Patrick surely knows how to keep his readers entertained.

From the moment I picked up Pulse, I was in for a surprise. I was not expecting to enjoy this book, the first book, as much as I did. The book contains a good taste of romance that is well timed and it leaves you wanting more. Not only this but there is a mystery and well, if you like mystery like myself, then this series will keep you turning to pages.

Quake picks right where Tremor ends. You must read the books in order. In Pulse, we come to learn Gretchen is the leader of the drifters and mother of Dylan. In Tremor, we learn her past and discover Dylan’s father identity. To top this, we learn about second-pulses. In Quake, readers will learn more of the four second-pulses, what they are capable of doing. More like what else they are capable. Just when we think we know where the story is heading, Patrick throws us new information and leaves us unbalance. Yet, wraps everything up nicely.

After finishing Quake… Yeah, I’m still in wonder at the way things ended. Patrick surely knows how to create an action-packed plot. Seriously, he's brilliant. Even though its bittersweet to have this series end, I am happy how things ended. I am looking forward to read more of his work.

Lovers of sci-fi should give Pulse series a try!

It was a book.

There was almost nothing memorable about this trilogy. It fits the typical, used up plot line that is YA Dystopian currently. Girl has special powers, girl has something negative with parents, girl fights government, girl gets love interest, meaningless characters suffer meaningless deaths, Big Bad Guy kills everyone, someone somehow stops him, and then they live happily ever after (assuming that the 2 teenage couples composed of emotionally distressed people last forever.)

This book introduces QFT for a reader with no prior knowledge of the subject. It is meant to be a textbook for advanced undergraduate or beginning postgraduate students. The book discusses quantization of fields, S-matrix theory, Feynman diagrams, calculation of decay rates and cross sections, renormalization, symmetries and symmetry breaking. Some background material on classical field theory and group theory, needed for the exposition, are also presented in the book. Detailed calculations of weak and electromagnetic processes are included. There are many exercise problems to help the students, instructors and beginning researchers in the field. The second edition improves upon some notations and explanations, and includes answers to selected exercises.

Finally an "easy" book on QFT

I had to specially order this book but it was well worth it.

To start the authors presuppose only the standard undergraduate mathematical background. Readers adept in multi-variable calculus and linear algebra with applications to Special Relativity and introductory quantum mechanics will have no difficulty with the book.

The authors present the IDEAS of QFT and then elaborate adding detail in stages with worked examples.

They first introduce classical field theory and develop both the Langrangian and Hamiltonian concepts culminating in the principle of least action. Variational calculus techniques are employed to develop the standard euler langrange equations. Noether's theorem is introduced which roughly speaking, states that for each symmetry of the Langrangian one has a conserved quantity. For example space translation invariance leads to conservation of linear momentum and time symmetry leads to conservation of energy. Two types of symmetries are distinguished, namely internal and external. Lorentz transformations fall within the later category.

Quantization of the energy mass relation is shown to lead to the Klein-Gordon equation which has issues when intrepreted as a wavefunction equation.

We see how the general solution for the Klein-Gordon equation should be intrepreted as an operator equation ( so called second quantization ). This leads to a meaningful reintrepretation of the solution as a quantum field with spacetime acting as a way to label the operators. That is each spacetime point has an infinite collection of annihilation and creation operators ( 1 for each momentum ). Fock space, ground states and normal ordering issues are dealt with. The commutation relationships are explored.

Complex scalar fields are dealt with next with few changes but new phenomena of antiparticles.

The idea of a propagator is introduced namely the transition probability amplitude of the creation of a particle at a spacetime point and annihilation later. This is done using Green functions and then shown to be the same as the above transition amplitude. The importance of time ordering of operators is introduced.

The dirac equation and solutions and second quantization of this field is discussed as are the propogators. It is shown how the hamiltonian derived from the appropriate langrangian has negative energy issues which can only be dealt with by using anticommutation rules. This in turn implies the pauli exclusion principle. Thus the dirac field is suitable in describing spin 1/2 particles.

Thus far the book has dealt with free fields. Now comes the interesting part..interactions. The S matrix is defined and a perturbation expansion explained. Wick expansion is dealt with and we see how the terms in the wick expansion can be pictorially understood.. a natural segueway to Fenyman diagrams. Fenyman rules are introduced. We thus see how the S matrix elements which allow the calculation of transition probabilites between "input" and "output" states can be broken down using wick expansion to individual processes which can be drawn as Fenyman diagrams which can then be used to calculate the probability amplitudes using fenyman rules. This sounds complex but EACH STEP is explained with plenty of examples.

The authors then deal with quantizing the EM field and show how we run into problems unless...new idea here....we introduce gauge fixing. By now you should know what is coming. The field operators are derived as are the propogators and fenyman diagrams for the photon.

We are now ready for QED ( quantum electrodynamics ). It is shown how the langrangian describing the dirac field has a global symmetry. However, as every physics student knows this is not desired in SR which implies local symmetry ( finite speed of light ). Thus trying to make this langrangian have a local symmetry necessitates the introduction of another field....the EM field! This is another idea....called....gauging the global symmetry. Now the QED is applied to electron-positron and compton scattering.

Next the CPT discrete symmetries are dealt with as is renormalization.

The authors then introduce symmetry breaking. That is although the Langrangian may possess the symmetry the ground state may not. They show how symmetry breaking introduces massless particles called goldstone bosons in the case of global symmetries.. The requisite group theory is nicely introduced here. Local symmetries which undergo symmetry breaking are introduced and it is shown how the massless field disappears and how the gauge field terms acquire mass! This is the so called Higgs mechanism and has implications for electroweak theory.

The authors then tackle non-abelian symmetries ( Yang-Mills theories ) just touching on the need for "ghost" fields ( Fadeev Popov method) and Quantum chromodynamics. Briefly the Langrangian for the quarks is "gauged" which produces 8 gauge fields or gluons. There really is no detail here but the reader is inticed to explore more advanced texts.

Finally, electroweak theory is briefly outlined...again the reader is prepared for more advanced texts.

The mathematically mature student with a background in SR and non-relativistic QM will have no problem completing this book in a few months or less.

I would read this book before starting Peskin and Schroeder.

Terrific introduction to Quantum Field Theory

This is the textbook when I was learning QFT. I think this is one of the best books for introducing Quantum Field Theory at a postgraduate level. Starting with the reaon why people need QFT, the idea of second quantizaiton is introduced. Both boson and fermion fields are given in a very clear way, followed by Feynman diagrams, Wick's theorem etc. Decay rates and cross sections are calculated with many worked examples. Finally, the ideas of renormalization, symmetry and symmetry breaking, non-Abelian gauge field are included in its second part. The whole book is written in an easy-to-understand language. The important concepts are emphasized with examples. I feels very comfortable when reading this book. This book is not so deep, so if you want to know more about QFT, you need to read other books.

Learning QFT? Yes, you need this book.

This book is reminiscent of Mandl Shaw, another popular "easy" QFT book, but this one's better overall. Mandle Shaw starts out by throwing the Fourier decomposition of the field at you straight away instead of easing you into the subject, following the seeming physics authoring trend of containing an introduction that's only comprehensible once you've finished the book. (Do physics authors know what conclusions are for?) The Lahiri Pal introduction is very readable though, and technicality ramps up in a reasonable way. Also, the writing style of this book is very concise and entertaining. Some chapters read almost like mysteries, starting with puzzles that await solving--much better that the usual approach of meandering without any strategy the reader is aware of. I really like certain sections of Mandl Shaw, such as the explanation of QED Feynman diagrams in Ch. 7, but all in all Lahiri Pal is a much smoother intro to QFT, not because it's easier or dumbed down, but because it's just plain better. My favorite part is the awesome calculation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron in 11.3. Hopefully this excellent book's popularity will increase!
