Definitely worth it

I really don't know about anyone else, but the possibility of an Xcom: Enemy Unknown (1993) novella is pretty much null. That being said, Crimson Dagger is the next best thing.

Written as a prequel of Xenonauts, a "spiritual successor" of Xcom 93, Lee manages to capture the feeling of encountering those lumbering extra terestrials hellbent on humanity's destruction quite well. And for $0.99, is definitely worth the price.

I love the games and when it comes to a professional story written about one of my more beloved game world, XCOM, then I pay heed and give it the attention that it deserves.
If you like reading, love sci-fi and love XCOM, buy this book!

Wow, what an amazing short story! I truly hope this was not the only story by Lee Stephen settled in the Xenonauts universe. I know it is meant as a prequel to the game, but another story would be most appreciated!

Lot's of excitement in Crimson Moon!

Crimson Moon ended up being more exciting that what I thought it would be! I am so happy that I read this because the characters in this book are wonderful!

Crimson Moon starts off with a little background info on the main character, Emma. You get the opportunity to hear all about her lonely life. She has no mother or father. All she has is grandma, and she can't even remember who Emma is. Emma's life takes a sudden change the minute an old classmate talks to her at a diner. From that moment on Crimson Moon is all excitement! Emma is pretty much thrown into a world that she never new existed. She learns all about vampires and werewolves and how both creatures are a part of her life. She also learns that she is a member of vampire royalty, and that her life will now change forever. Her life is also no longer safe, and she must be protected at all costs. She is surrounded by several werewolves who have been given the task of protecting her and one of those werewolves is Caleb. Caleb is a total gentleman. He risks his life to get her where she needs to go safely while filling her in on what her new life will be. There are times that Emma wishes that her life could go back to what it used to be. But there is no turning back now.

Along the way we meet lots of interesting characters. One such character is Trent. The minute Trent came into the scene I knew that things were going to get a lot more interesting. If you like bad boy vampires, Trent is the one for you. He also becomes one of Emma's protectors and teaches her lot of things about the vampire world.

Crimson Moon was the type of book that sucked me in from the beginning. I just didn't want to stop reading and when the end came, I was sad. I wanted the story to just go on and on. That my people is a sign of a good book as well as a great author. Jaime has told me that Crimson Moon was the first book that she ever wrote and all I can say is that I am impressed. I am a huge fan of Jaime's writing and cannot wait for what she has in store for us in the future.

Romantic Paranormal

Emma is a young woman who is basically on her own. She doesn't know her father and her mother died when she was young so she was raised by her grandmother who is now incoherent most days due to her failing health. Her life is not that of an average 18 year old but certainly certainly mundane to say the least. That's all about to change with one visit to a local cafe. A former classmate from school spots her and stops to say hello. When Emma gets a strange vibe from him, she makes a polite but quick retreat. That's when her world is changed forever. She finds herself being chased down by a gang of semi-human creatures. In the process she is abducted by two men who claim they are they are there to protect her. They tell her she is the daughter of a powerful Trueblood vampire and her life is in danger. In a matter of minutes, Emma is thrust into a dangerous world of vampires and werewolves.

Caleb is a werewolf who is part of a unique group that has been hired by the Trueblood vampires for protection. This is supposed to be just a job but it doesn't take Caleb long to realize Emma is much more than a charge he's bound to protect. In the process of their journey together, Emma finds herself inexplicably attracted to Caleb, and he appears to feel the same way about her. Fate seems to have put them together, however it is now about to tear them apart. Emma must leave Caleb to go to her Vampire family to make a choice that will forever change her life.

Crimson Moon reads almost like to books combined. In the first half (the werewolf half) we experience Emma and Caleb's developing romance. Knowing they will have to eventually part ways it's a very emotional build on their romantic relationship. When the time comes for Emma to leave and go to her vampire family,(the vampire half) we're introduced to Trent, a vampire that has been watching Emma for years. He's been watching out for her on orders from her father. He acts as mentor to her when she is introduced to her vampire family, guiding her and teaching her in vampire ways and laws. He also has a romantic interest in Emma which she resists, but due to her circumstances, things become very complicated.

I found myself very torn in this love triangle which I didn't think possible. Caleb is certainly a swoon worthy hero and he captured my heart right away. When Trent entered the picture I was immediately suspect of him and never dreamed I might be tempted to the vampire side. However I found myself to be quite fickle in my affections for the heroes in this story and a bit torn in how I feel about the ending. I most certainly look forward to the next book in series, in hopes that all the heroes I loved in this book will find their happily ever after.

I really only have one tiny complaint with this story and it's one I can't discuss fully without spoiling. So, I will put it this way: I was not fully convinced at the reaction one of the characters had to an epic betrayal. Although this particular character seemed to take pretty much everything in stride, the betrayal was major and the reaction just didn't seem inline with the offense and it felt glazed over. I wish I could go into more but that's really all l can say without ruining a major plot twist, sorry.

J.A. Saare has written a wonderfully romantic story in Crimson Moon. The characters are emotionally authentic and the writing is crisp with with an exciting plot that is sure to pull you in and keep you captivated with every page. If you like stories with sexy, romantic heroes, strong, quick witted heroines, and intriguing plot twists, then you'll want to read Crimson Moon.

Another great work by J.A. Saare! I have to disagree with the reviewer who said they loved Dead, Undead, or Somewhere In Between and felt like Crimson Moon was written by a different author.

I don't think it's fair to compare CM with Dead. Crimson Moon's Emma is not Rhiannon and I don't think we should expect the same type of characters or writing from the author each time. I personally enjoy it when authors branch out so to speak and write different types of novels. Otherwise, you just end up with someone like Danielle Steel who writes the same novel over and over and over using different characters.

Saare is a versatile writer with excellent characters and I look forward to her coming works!

that this is exactly the sort of thing you would like if you like exactly this sort of thing. The works in this volume are translations of the authors. Since that's a form of interpretation (translation), we do face the question of how much is the essence of the ancient Greek and Roman author, and how much is the translator. I have owned copies of this work for three or four decades, and it's because I want to reference original writing of the era and I don't read either Latin or Ancient Greek. Since you have read this far, you probably have an interest in philosophy to some degree, and this ought to find a place in your library.

Not Nietzsche

This is a brilliantly written novel, that moves you along quickly. The characters are reasonably well described, although it is hard to understand how the protagonist could have been married 4 times - that idea is not developed well and only serves the somewhat cartoonish purposes of the author. The novel is pretentious, in the way of those long and entertaining college discussions and it is not clear what the point is, unless the point is the hoary existential premise that there is no point. So, as a self-important work of philosophy, it is sophomoric, but in a somewhat charming way. If you've enjoyed exploring the meaning of life with your peers, you'll enjoy this book. It's a good read, but don't take it too seriously - Don de Lillo writes well, but Nietzsche he ain't.

Occasionally brilliant, ultimately unsatisfying

I'm not sure what to think of Don DeLillo. White Noise, like Mao II, like Underworld, like End Zone, is a book bursting with ideas and observations about people, the world and modern life. And some of these observations will make you see things in a new way, or at least crystallize your thoughts so perfectly that you nod your head and say, "Yes, that's exactly what I think. Now why didn't I say it like that?" Well, because you're not Don DeLillo. So give the man credit, because that's something few people can do. At the same time White Noise shows up one of DeLillo's bigger flaws: he doesn't really create characters you care about, even a little bit. Indeed, in White Noise I'm sure he didn't want to. They're not real characters at all, only a group of signifiers and commenators who all speak with the same voice and even use the same expressions, whether they are ex-sportswriters, housewives, sulking teens, or nine-year-old girls. By page 300 this gets tiresome. Intellectual insights are more memorable when they are hung on interesting and engaging characters. So while I enjoyed White Noise and am impressed with the mind behind it, I found it ultimately unsatisfying.

My New Favorite Author

Somehow I missed Delillo along the way and discovered him through a review of his newest book "Zero K". Delillo writes the kind of prose that frequently makes you stop reading the passage so that you can return to savor it again. The book is laugh-out-loud funny (Check out the family trip yo the mall) but also profound and moving. I think I've found a new favorite author.

We are back again with another instalment from the wonderful Vanessa Vale with her Wildflowers Of Montana this time it is Hyacinth turn.

When Jackson Reed comes back home from his time in the army, he catches the attention of the seven lovely Lenox daughters. But he has eyes for just the one … the beautiful Hyacinth Lenox. It's obvious that she has noticed him also, so why is she avoiding him?

Hyacinth just can't stop herself she thinks about this handsome sandy-haired newcomer so much its scares her, but whilst she longs for her happy ever after with Jackson, she feels that she is not worthy enough to marry let alone him the one she desires the most. Guilt mares her from a tragic incident from her childhood it still scares her now in her adulthood, It leaves her feeling that she is undeserving of Jackson's love.

But Jackson isn't a man to give up so easily. He is determined to help Hyacinth overcome her past and her pain and make her his wife. Will he be able to succeed in awakening her to the carnal pleasures that he wants just with her?

He has sensed a great capacity for love and sizzling hot passion in this fair Lenox flower.

Unlocking it will for sure mean a battle of wills, but this love is worth the fight and then some.

Another great story it will make your heart skip a beat. In this book I loved how it was softer than Rose's story Hyacinth is rather delicate just like her name sake the flower, I loved how patient Jackson is with her and how he takes charge so perfectly he knows just the right buttons to press, and who would stop him huh …. lol I no I wouldn't.

Hyacinth as I said above is rather delicate she is also rather cool and calm she has had to endure allot in her life, but then she never thought she would find a man such as Jackson either. I love how Hyacinth is so unflappable especially with her sisters she makes me smile at times I couldn't believe she is a perfect lead character and the type of person I would love too be friends with.

Now Jackson he is sinfully handsome and strong he sets his eyes on Hyacinth and he will not waver, if one thing the army has taught him is not to give up or in..... good thing too as Hyacinth is so unsure of herself her life and him and he is the right man to help her. I loved his softness and the edge of tough guy, and how he sees the real Hyacinth he totally had me from the get go, in fact he was my favourite character.

One of my most favourite parts is how Miss Trudy lets them have alone time and Jackson catches Hyacinth in the most surprising of way's. I wont give away how as it would be a major spoiler but its a doozey and then some.

I just love Vanessa Vale she sure knows how to lure you in to her magical books.

This is the second installment in this series and just as H-O-T as the first. Hyacinth is the responsible sister who is not only shy but feels she is undeserving of having a love of her own. Jackson is home from the Army and has the attention of all the Lennox sisters but the only one he really sees is Hyacinth and he will do anything and everything to get her attention. I really love how all the sisters have flower names and they certainly seem to live up to their namesakes. This is a sexy read and will definitely keep you warm, or H-O-T on a winter's night.

He describes dog-sledding in the far north and the cannibalistic practices of the people of Java far to the south, both of which are extant in our current era. There are also the fascinating observations of the Mongol Empire, of that group of nomadic people who somehow rose up, like an event in an Isaac Asimov novel, to conquer much of the known world.

Somewhat depressingly, though, are Polo's observations of the tensions that existed between the Islamic and Christian worlds, tensions rooted in the competition for hegemony over trade in the Far East. Seven hundred years later, these tensions are still acting themselves out.

This translation by Ronald Latham from 1958 includes an introduction that puts Marco Polo's life in context with events and includes footnotes to help the reader make sense of the myriad manuscripts that make up the travels of Marco Polo. This is a somewhat dry read; even Latham comments on the paucity of skill employed by Polo's chronicler. Once I put my mind in context with the narrative, however, I was able to roll with the repetition and sycophancy and enjoy the text.

This book represents the first accounts given to Europe of the riches of the East. Marco Polo inspired European explorers to make new adventures. Columbus grabbed at Marco Polo's descriptions and sailed west to find the Orient. He was misled about geographical distances, and spent many years trying to correlate his discoveries with Marco Polo's descriptions.

Some observations:
- It is remarkable how many city names have not changed in the past 800 years.
- Marco Polo describes Christians in China, not far from Taiwan, in a community established in 500 AD. I'd like to know more about them,
- It is worthwhile to read this. In addition, I found a great many references from modern life back to Marco Polo. How about the Pony Express, Jaws, and Chechnyan violence?

The back pages of the book have an overview map and two regional maps - very handy. I like the spoken style of the writing - what more needs to be said?

Very early enounter with Islam

I've read this book before. I wanted a copy again because I want to reread his comments about moslems as one of the first Westerners to write an account about them. He is not complimentary,,as most Westerners were/aer of their experiences of moslemite culture.
