Excellent Resource

Non-biased information on Arab Americans and Muslims can be very difficult to find, but I found this guide to be thoughtful, honest and educational. This book filled a huge void in my knowledge base on these diverse communities and was great myth buster. We need more non-fiction handbooks like this and I'm thankful to have found it. Well done!

This is a very easy to read guide on a very complex subject. The author took a very deep topic and injected wit and candor to create a very readable handbook. I would recommend the Arab-American handbook to anyone who wants to learn more about this complex subject. Well done!

Insightful!

I work for an advertising agency that helps the U.S gov. in two fronts, Recruiting and Public Awareness to ethnic groups in the U.S. While learning about minorities such as African Americans, Asian Americans, or Hispanic Americans is relatively easy due to the vast availability of information, the process is quite complicated when it comes to outreach to Arab Americans.
This book helped me understand the Arab American community much, much better and gave me a lot of insights on cultural subtleties and sensitivities that I was not aware of.
Information such as that the majority of Arab Americans are Christians and the majority of Muslim Americans are African Americans are two of so many things I learned after reading this book. I look forward for the second edition!

About the Author
Richard Poplak was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1973 and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1989. A co-founder of the successful Canadian music label 2wars & A Revolution Records, Richard is also a trained filmmaker and has directed numerous music videos, earning five nominations at the 2005 MuchMusic Video Awards. Richard has written for various publications in Canada and South Africa, including Toronto Life, Canadian Living, and CBC Online. A little uneven, but ultimately worth while

The Sheikh's Batmobile is part travelogue, part cultural investigation, and part personal exploration. Mr. Poplak visits several Muslim countries searching for the consequences of the hegemony of Western popular cultural in the region. I'm not quite sure that's right though: It is almost as if he is exploring how Western popular culture manifests itself in Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, the UAE, Indonesia, Iran, Afghanistan, and others (I know I'm missing a few.)

The book is often funny, and Mr. Poplak has a penchant for finding the humor and absurdity in the ways in which American popular culture is twisted, changed, and manipulated in the Muslim world. The best chapters are the ones on the Arabic version of the Simpsons and the WWE loving kids in Afghanistan.

Some of the chapters are a little less interesting--the death metal scene in Indonesia sticks out as one of these--but the book does a fairly good job of presenting the issue. One scene in particular stuck out for me: The author was discussing the Arabic version of the Simpsons with the producer. The Arabic version scrubbed out some of the social commentary that makes the Simpsons so funny and popular in the United States. The Arabic producer asked the author (I'm paraphrasing here) "Is that all we have, entertainment?"

I've been asking myself that question many times since reading it, especially in the face of the upcoming royal wedding, Donald Trump, and the other inanities presented to us as news. It is surprising--I found an insight to our own culture in a book trying to find insights in how our culture impacts Muslim culture.

I happened to come across Richard Poplak's "The Sheikh's Batmobile" at a local used book store a while back. It wasn't a book I was familiar with but the cover looked interesting enough and I decided to take the gamble. I'm genuinely glad I did as I found Poplak's writing to be some of the most insightful, nuanced and entertaining commentary on the Islamic world that I've read to date.

A pop culture commentator by trade, Poplak visits nearly 20 Muslim-majority countries over the span of two years in the hopes of viewing firsthand how the Western pop culture he loves has found its way to, and uniquely ingrained itself in, the Dar al-Islam.

Perhaps Poplak's greatest accomplishment was his ability to humanize those he encountered. He refuses to fall into the easy but tired, Orientalist stereotypes and one-dimensional characters that many Middle East observers, intentionally or otherwise, so often seem to do. Throughout "The Sheikh's Batmobile," from Libya to Indonesia and a lot of places in between, the author finds the similarities that bind us far more than the differences that divide our cultures.

In times of such turmoil Poplak's work reads as a refreshing reminder of our common, shared humanity.

Required Reading

I was shocked to see the low reviews given this book, and once I read them thought I should chip in my 2 cents to offset the bizarre review previously submitted. This book is a standard for anyone interested in issues around equity and diversity and how the politics of our culture can best be answered and improved through our work with young children. We've known this since LBJ was president and he commissioned the Kerner Report - in order to stop bias and the anger that it causes, we need to start with the youngest among us. I've had this book by my side for the almost 20 years I've worked with children, and consider it to be as crucial and important as Sue Bredecamp's DAP. This is not a book of lies, it's the most honest direct approaches to diversity. And it speaks the truth.

Essential ECE Teacher Resource

Louise Derman-Sparks book continues to be a favorite of mine since I first purchased it nearly 18 years ago. As a teacher of young children, I found it invaluable in helping me create a classroom that tangibly respected the diversity of our families (chapter 2, "Creating an Anti-Bias Environment" was especially helpful with this task). When I first came upon the book I was well versed in helping children develop high self-esteem, but this book helped me realize that sometimes that positive identity is based on ethnocentrism or stereotyping. The introduction to the book was most thought provoking! I read "Boys need to learn competence without also learning to feel and act superior to girls"...and "Differences are good; oppressive ideas and behaviors are not." This book helped me move from a multicultural (tourist) approach to a genuinely respectful anti-bias approach to help children affirm and enjoy cultural identities in their community. Chapter 7 "Learning about Cultural Differences and Similarities" is an invaluable resource for planning respectful activities. I encourage all teachers of young children to read and use this most valuable resource.

I read this for an Early Childhood Education class, and it's amazing.

Parents, when you're looking for a preschool, you NEED to ask the director to show you the campus copy of this. If the campus does not have this on hand, do not put your kids in that preschool.

Basically, anyone can open a pre-school and anyone can run it any way they want (within bounds of state and federal laws), BUT Anti-Bias Curriculum (ABC) is the healthiest understanding for anyone who deals with a lot of different children on how to deal with how kids perceive differences between themselves and others. Also, whether you realize it or not, your kid is picking up YOUR biases before they even set foot in preschool, and this allows the preschool to teach the kids a healthy way to deal with those biases and learn how to accept other children who seem strange to them.

I would go so far to say that every teacher and administrator at any level should be required to read this, because even though its mostly talking about very little children, I think it would help in those schools who have found themselves faced with lawsuits because they had a teacher or administrator who did not know how to teach different kids like humans.

Tim VanDerKamp lives in New Orleans where he teaches yoga, meditation, and mindfulness. He has a bachelors degree in marketing from The University of Tampa and a Phd from The School of Hard Knocks. Tim is living the good life; after a successful career as a business management consultant, Tim left the business world and set his inner hippie free to write, teach yoga, travel, and surf. On any given day you might find him teaching a yoga class, sitting in meditation, or surfing the warm waters of the gulf coast. Not Your Typical Self-Help Book!

I really loved this book because it was a very quick read and instantly gave me tools I could use that started helping right away. I read it in 2 days just sitting in car line waiting for my kids. In fact, I'm sharing some of these techniques with them! It's so simple, but the author (Tim Vanderkamp) arms us with techniques that I had never thought of and really work! This book is different than most self-help books that I have read because, instead of talking at you, the author speaks from personal experience, which in my book, gives him more credibility. If it worked for him, it should work for me, right? He doesn't talk down to or patronize the reader, he's been there. I am recommending this book to all my friends and family who suffer from negative thinking syndrome and have that pity-party going on in their heads.

Refrehsing!!

I bought this book because of how much I have enjoyed and connected with the author's social media content. I have to say the book exceeded my expectations even so. It is short, easily digestible in chunks or a single sitting, and practical, practical, practical. I am also a pretty direct person, and the absence of "airy fairy" feel good-isms really spoke to me. I have already used the techniques described on numerous occassions, and have referred back to it several times. If anything, I wish it was longer, and look forward to the next installment!

About the Author
Roi Cohen Kadosh is a Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Oxford. He received his PhD in Neuropsychology (summa cum laude, direct track) on the mental operations and neuropsychological mechanisms of numerical and magnitude processing under the supervision of Avishai Henik from the Ben-Gurion University in 2006. During this time he also had the opportunity to gain experience with neuroimaging techniques, such as fMRI and ERP under the supervision of David Linden at the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research (Frankfurt, Germany), and practiced for one year as clinical neuropsychologist at the Traumatic Brain Injuries Unit, Beit Lowenstein Rehabilitation Center in Israel. During his PhD period he also completed the European Diploma in Cognitive and Brain Sciences (EDCBS, 2003-4). He received funding from several sources including the International Brain Research Organization, and the European Union (Marie Curie Intra European Fellowship) to investigate the neural substrate of numerical representations using brain stimulation and neuroimaging during his postdoctoral training with Vincent Walsh at University College London. He joined EP as a Wellcome RCD Fellow in 2009 where he established the Cohen Kadosh Lab.

Decent stories, but no variety

I just finished the series, and am glad I didn't buy them individually. All in all, the stories aren't bad, but they're ridiculously predictable - so cookie-cutter. The first story is slightly different because our Reestrian hero has known the woman for a long time and has always loved her. He risks everything to go back to Earth in an attempt to talk her into being his mate forever. The rest of the stories were all the same in how they played out: Reestrian male meets Earth female, the male's mating fever kicks in and he decides he wants to mate with the Earth female, time is short because the Reestrian male could go insane if he doesn't mate within a few days, the Earth female says no because she wants a traditional Earth "wine-and-dine" courtship, the male risks his sanity to give her the courtship she wants, the mating fever mysteriously abates enough for him to do so even though it was hitting him hard-and-heavy initially, eventually the Earth female gives in and they become bonded mates. Soul mates, of a sort, although I was also disappointed in the constant reminders that, even though our Earth female sparked the mating fever, the Reestrian male can actually have sex with any unclaimed female in order to fix the mating fever, and the bond will be just as deep and special as it would have been with our heroine. I would have preferred a setup where the female was special in some way, instead of having one of her reasons for giving in to our hero being that she didn't want him to move on to someone else. It was disappointing to me that he could go ahead and have the same kind of bond with any woman.

All in all, the stories weren't bad, but after the third one, it was just too repetitive for me.

I just finished reading the whole series,it was great.I love a sci-find romance.All of the aliens in these stories acted tuff but they were just big teddy bears.I don't know how any human could resist a hunky alien.You have to buy the complete set and curl up with a cup of tea and read.

Pretty good for a serial.

I usually only enjoy serial novels about a single couple where the novellas added together make a whole novel but this one was about five different couples. Kinda hard to tell a full story in that short of word count. However, I think that they were really good and I wouldn't be adverse to checking out more books by this author. Good job!

Guillaume Caoursin, the Vice-chancellor of the Order of the Hospital, wrote the Obsidionis Rhodiae urbis descriptio (Description of the Siege of Rhodes) as the official record of the Ottoman siege of the Knights in Rhodes in 1480. The Descriptio was the first authorized account of the Order’s activities to appear in printed form, and it became one of the best sellers of the 15th century. The publication of the Descriptio not only fed Western Europe’s hunger for news about an important Christian victory in the ongoing war with the Turks, it also served to shape public perceptions of the Hospitallers. Caoursin wrote in a humanistic style, sacrificing military terminology to appeal to an educated audience; within a few years, however, his Latin text became the basis for vernacular versions, which also circulated widely. Modern historians recognize the contributions that the Ottoman siege of Rhodes in 1480 made in the development of military technology, particularly the science of fortifications. This book is the first complete modern Latin edition with an English translation of the Descriptio obsidionis Rhodiae. Two other published eyewitness accounts, Pierre D’Aubusson’s Relatio obsidionis Rhodie and Jacomo Curte’s De urbis Rhodiae obsidione a. 1480 a Turcis tentata, also appear in modern Latin edition and English translation. This book also includes John Kay’s Description of the Siege of Rhodes and an English translation of Ademar Dupuis’ Le siège de Rhodes. The lengthy introductory chapters by Theresa Vann place the Ottoman siege of Rhodes in 1480 within the context of Mehmed II’s expansion in the Eastern Mediterranean after he captured Constantinople in 1453. They then examine the development of an official message, or propaganda, as an essential tool for the Hospitallers to raise money in Europe to defend Rhodes, a process that is traced through the chancery’s official communications describing the aftermath of Constantinople and the Ottoman
