One of the best books on the Roman Catholic Church

As someone who has studied the Dark Ages, the Reformation, and the history of the conflict with Rome against the true Gospel, I can testify that this is one of the best books ever written on Rome. But what this author does, which is so needed, is to show the influence of the Roman Church in the modern world. He cites papal bulls, encyclicals, and one source after another, showing the manipulations of the Catholic Church in modern times. Robbins proves beyond any doubt that Rome has continued to pursue its ambition of world domination, in spite of all the media propaganda to the contrary, and the opinion of blinded evangelicals who seem to believe that the pope is now an "angel of light" or that Catholicism is simply another denomination of Christianity.

This is a great book for research and reference, very meticulously put together. If you are someone who has been following the trail of historic evidence to figure out why the Freemasons, the Skull and Bones, and the Illuminati seem to get blamed for everything -- while most researchers ignore the Vatican and the Jesuit Order -- then this book should be in your library. The author proves that the cry of the Reformers against the Great Harlot of Revelation 17 was not in vain. The Bible gives no uncertain sound as to the danger of the city on seven hills, and neither does this excellent book.

I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to understand the working of the Roman Catholic Church in world
politics today. John W. Robbins presents an amazing array of facts, and up to date info. on the Vatican.
Perhaps most compelling was his documentation of Rome's intelligence agency, which is said to be the largest
and most capable in the world. Great book for research!

A Terrific Book With Minor Flaws

Robbins takes up the considerable task of examining what the Catholic
Church position on economics and politics is and has been over its 1500+
year history. He does this using church canon law, papal writings, and
the writings of its intellectual Fathers like Aquinas. In other words,
he uses a great deal of primary source material to justify his analysis.
(Well, he uses quotes of the source material found in later anthologies,
to be more precise.) To support his analysis and conclusions, Robbins
also cites a breadth of commentators and critics of Catholicism both
from within and outside the Church.
This is primarily a work of scholarship not a popular or religious
commentary (except as noted in the "Flaws" section below). Having said
that, _you_ do not particularly have to be a scholar to understand it.
Some general understanding of Church and secular history is helpful,
and, if you are unschooled in theological terminology, a dictionary
would be helpful.
Except as noted in the "Flaws" section below, this is primarily a work
on economics and politics. Of necessity, it also addresses some issues
of Church doctrine and theology, since the economic/ political theory
springs in some degree from that doctrine.
The Punchline
-------------
Robbins critique' is devastating. He makes a compelling case that the
intellectual tradition of Catholicism is statist, collectivist, hostile
to constitutional government, friendly to fascism and totalitarian
secular states, hostile to property rights, and even supportive of
slavery and other human rights abuses. He further demonstrates that
these were not just the positions of the ancient Roman Church, but are
the intellectual currency of the Vatican through the late 20th Century.
Along the way, he provides a lot of little historical tidbits like how
the claim of the Church for temporal political power is founded on a
document ("The Donation Of Constantine" - reproduced in the Appendix)
known to be a forgery as early as the 15th Century. Finally, and
importantly, he addresses late 20th Century efforts to rewrite history
and present the Church as friendly to Classical Liberal ideas.
Like many non-Catholics, I'd always assumed that the Roman Church's
excesses were merely the product of unfettered power prior to the
Reformation, and that it had adapted to Classical Liberal ideas in the
West. Robbins demolishes this idea, and goes to some lengths to show
just how hostile the intellectual underpinnings of the Church remain to
Capitalist economy, property rights, separation of Church and State, and
so forth. I never quite understood how an institution putatively
fighting evil could stand by quietly during the Nazi attrocities or the
pederasty within the priesthood. Now I get it.
Flaws
-----
Robbins is a scholar, but he is also a devout Christian in the
Westminster Confession Presbyterian tradition. In and of itself, this
presents no problem. However, this book is by turns history, analysis,
and polemic. The polemic is thankfully minimal, but he undermines the
credibility of his scholarship when he includes footnote comments like,
"the antichrist can be heard in the encyclicals of the present pope." I
have no particular objection to his doctrinal observations and opinions,
they are simply not segregated clearly from his historical scholarship
and analysis, which is after all, what the book is supposed to be about.
In weaving his theological commentary into the economic/political
history, he opens himself up to the legitimate criticism that parts of
the book read like a religious tract rather than pure scholarship.
In those places where he does indulge in theological observations, he
does a poor job of defining terms. His use of the term "Christian" or
"Scriptural" are not what most secular readers or even Catholic readers
would understand them to be. I have the advantage of a pretty thorough
background in Christian theology in various traditions, but if you do
not, these portions of the book will seem at least strange, or more
probably, inflamatory and ad hominem in nature (which I do not believe
he intended).
Thankfully, this is a minor problem - the book remains primarily a
historical fact gathering and critique' of Catholic economics and
politics.
The other problem here is validating the analysis (I take it on faith
that Robbins facts are right). I am aware of no scholarly response to
Robbins claims which might refute or amend his conclusions. It would be
interesting to see, for example, a Jesuit response to this book...
Finally, there is a theme taken up in the book I wish he had spent more
time on. Early in the writing, he shows how our modern Classical Liberal
ideas about property and personal rights sprang, in part, from the
Calvinist Reformation thinkers. Furthermore, in keeping with the overall
theme of the book, he goes on to say that these Classical Liberal ideas
were in direct opposition to Roman Catholic thinking. I wish he would
have _ended_ the book with this topic and expanded it a lot more. There
is some very rich analysis to be done here, and his treatment is long on
assertion, but shallow in supporting evidence. What's there is really
good, but I wanted another 50 pages on this topic alone because it is
not well treated in any Church History I've ever seen.
Recommendation
--------------
As I said at the outset, this is just a terrific piece of scholarship
and writing. It is as about well written as something of this nature can
be ... it is not an "easy" read, but it is not a dry scholastic text
either. If you enjoy reading detailed histories, you should enjoy this
as well. Again, I caution the devout Catholics among us - be prepared to
be shocked, dismayed, and/or angry if you read this - Robbins
conclusions are extremely unkind (to say the least) to Roman
Catholicism, both past and present.

Random data and Coherent content

My major is meteorology and deal with time series data, which have huge amount of data number. This book is very helpful to me. I have to determine the statistical significance of my data and check up the assumptions both in time and frequency domain, before deciding the statistical tests. I read a few this kinds of books but they were only concentrated on the explanation of simple statistics theory and then came to stop after showing only a few simple examples. So it is difficult to apply to my raw data because the assumptions that were applied to the theory were invalid in real situation. For example, ¡°Introduction to probability and statistics for engineers and scientist, by Sheldon M. Ross¡± is too theoretical to me and the application of theories is biased to the persons who are interested in small data set. Additionally, many books assumed the normal distribution and did not refer how we could test these assumptions. In analyzing the time series, not only is important the data analysis in time domain, but also the analysis in frequency domain. ¡°Applied Statistical time series analysis by Shumway¡± dealt with it. However, ¡°Random data by Bendat and Piersol¡± more will be helpful to the people who deal with time series, want to design statistical filters and to do the statistical tests and need more profound and systematic theories and understanding.

Joseph LeDoux, a professor at the Center for Neural Science at New York University, has written the most comprehensive examination to date of how systems in the brain work in response to emotions, particularly fear. Among his fascinating findings is the work of amygdala structure within the brain. The amygdala mediates fear and other responses and actually processes information more quickly than other parts of the brain, allowing a rapid response that can save our lives before other parts of the brain have had a chance to react. He also offers findings and theories on how the brain handles--and in many cases, buries--extremely traumatic experiences. Brain researcher LeDoux believes that emotions evolved from bodily and behavioral responses controlled by the brain as a means to help our remote ancestors survive a hostile environment. The emotional states we subjectively experience, in this theory, are the end result of information processing that occurs unconsciously as the brain decodes the significance of stimuli in order to shape appropriate behavior. In this intriguing report, LeDoux, a professor at New York University, draws heavily on his own research into the brain's "fear system," which suggests that unconscious fear-related memories imprinted on the brain can result in deep-rooted neurotic anxiety, phobias, panic attacks or obsessive-compulsive disorders. He also reviews studies indicating that multiple memory systems exist in the brain, including one for "emotional memories," which helps to explain the course of Alzheimer's disease as well as adults' inability to remember early childhood experiences. Laypersons will like it; Psychologists will NEED it...

For the layperson, LeDoux's book is an excellent account of the scientific search for understanding what emotions are and what they do. Comparing it to the several trendy books about measuring emotional intelligence isn't quite fair--this is not a self-help book that stresses the importance of good social skills (which to me, seems what emotional quotient boils down to). Instead, this book nicely weaves the best of psychological, biological, and cutting-edge neuroscientific research to give the reader a good picture of what scientists currently know about emotions and how emotions are experienced in the body and the mind. But despite the comprehensive scientific explanations, the book is extremely readable and filled with real-world implications. For a professor of neural science, LeDoux writes creatively (love those subheadings!), and I think this book can do for the study of emotions what Carl Sagan's Cosmos did for astronomy.
For psychologists, particularly psychotherapists, this book should be required reading. Despite dealing with people's emotions everyday, few therapists can give more than a basic explanation of what exactly an emotion is, and how it influences human functioning. This is partly because most textbook discussions of emotions are either too basic or too difficult, are just plain boring, or don't make the implications for therapists clear. LeDoux's book changes all that--I've reviewed several academic books, articles, and texts on understanding emotions, and kept coming back to this one. Do your graduate students (who may be groaning under the pressure of a dry neuroscience text!) a favor and make them all read The Emotional Brain--they'll be just as educated, and a lot more excited as well.

A long needed book

This book is a long-needed look at how those parts of the brain that mediate emotion, primarily the limbic system and the medial and lateral frontal cortex, affect our behavior, thinking, and our lives. This is a well-written and thoughful account for the intelligent layman about this important topic.
There are excellent discussions of the different limbic system structures as well as the frontal lobes. The sections on the amygdala I thought were especially good, and the discussions of how the frontal lobes and the limbic areas interact in various and important ways is equally good.
Unlike other important areas of science, there are few really accessible books on the brain for the non-specialist, but I've noticed the situation has improved significantly in the last 5 to 10 years. If you liked this book and want to round out your knowledge of the human brain, I can also recommend the following books, all of which are similarly well-regarded and well-written:
1. Descartes' Error: Emotion, Reason, and the Human Brain, by Antonio Damasio
2. The Language Instinct: How the Mind Creates Language, by Steven Pinker
3. Phantoms in the Brain: Probing the Mysteries of the Human Mind, by V. S. Ramachandran, Sandra Blakeslee
4. Nature's Mind: The Biological Roots of Thinking, Emotions, Sexuality, Language, and Intelligence, by Michael Gazzaniga
5. How Brains Think: Evolving Intelligences, Then & Now, by William H. Calvin
There are about a half dozen others that I could have added to this list, but I would read these first. In fact, I would start with Gazzaniga's book and then read the others, since his book is more of a general introduction, whereas the others deal more with certain special topics.
If you read these books you'll be in pretty good shape in terms of having at least a basic understanding of current neuroscience. Anyway, good luck and happy reading.

Good, but could have been so much better

I was ecstatic as I read LeDoux' first chapter, where he outlines the eight major points he plans to make. It's so clear, so logical, so .... Right. At last, I thought, I'm going to get from a major neuroscientist an overview of the emotions as organized in and by the brain.

LeDoux does follow through and explain his points, but alas, more in a manner establishing them and defending them against previous contrary research or thought than as a textbook or introduction for laypeople, which would seem to be his primary intended audience. He devotes a significant amount of space to historical background of how psychological and neurological sciences of emotion got to where they are today. Most of us don't need to know that research history. I don't care nearly as much about what was formerly thought as about what the author thinks Actually Is.

His point #1, that each emotion evolves differently and has its own neurological subsystem, is completely believable, but LeDoux lays out this emotional system for only one emotion -- fear. He is a prominent fear researcher, so we read several chapters focusing on fear and its cousin anxiety, yet almost completely nothing about all the others. Joy is mentioned once or twice, with no discussion. Love scarcely more. The sadness pathway is not outlined. He doesn't even take a stand on what the primary vs. secondary emotions are, a topic of argument going back at least to Descartes. I'd like to know what neurologists think about the development of these.

Sorry to be so negative. If the title were Fear and the Emotional Brain, I wouldn't have been so disappointed. LeDoux writes unusually clearly for a neurologist, and is thus a quicker read than Antonio Damasio, for instance. I just finished Emotional Brain, and will now go back and re-read Damasio's "Descartes' Error" and "The Feeling of What Happens." They are much tougher slogging, presuming more neuroanatomical knowledge than LeDoux. But Damasio is willing to take some risks to make calculated guesses and summary statements about how he envisions various processes, even though he's well aware that in some cases we may have insufficient scientific evidence to make them securely.

There is a great deal of profound knowledge and insight in this book. But it's not nearly as broad as its title implies.

PLEASE: Read this book IF you visit Lijiang China!!

I was in Lijiang (the book spells the town, Likiang), a UNESCO World History Site in 2008.
This book is set in this wonderful area in the 1940's, ending when the Maoist Chinese infiltrate and overtake the South in 1948 and conquer the country in 1949.
Even if you have never been to this area of the world this book is a gem. It is as close to Shangra-la as is possible. (I also read "Lost Horizon" while I stayed in Lijiang)
"Forbidden Kingdom" is an incredible verbal picture painted by a Western Man's (Russian/French) first-hand account of the changes that happened during the 1940's in the Naxi Chinese area. Written during the time when this "Silk Road" Town was the ONLY access point for outside goods to China during WWII. The Japanese held China's entire Coastal Region, WWII ended, then the Maoist infiltration came into this town.

I bought this book in the Lijiang airport, and would be surprised if it was sold outside Yunnan. That's a shame, because it's a fascinating account of a unique culture that no longer exists, at least as it did a century ago. A must for anyone visiting this area of China if you can find it.

Chilling. Hilarious. Heart Wrenching. Anyone who has had a childhood can relate to Rule of the Bone. A coming-of-age story that is full of twists and turns, ups and downs, and just when you think there can't possibly be any more surprises - Surprise!
Rule of the Bone is a beautiful and hideous look at life through the eyes of a fourteen year old boy who is basically raising himself and all that implies. But all that changes when he meets a young girl and a Jamaican man who teach him what it means to love and be loved.

Amazing results!

I'm a an innovative teacher with lots of K-college experience, but I recently switched to an "alternative high school." Until I got this book NOTHING worked. This book is "about my students," because they can identify. Their ability is often quite high, but their scope is VERY narrow, and I needed something like this to get their attention. Rule of the Bone features a (very) modern Huck Finn. I would strongly recommend it to any high school teacher, although I think it might cause an altercation between the presenting teacher and the school board at a conventional high school.
